Outcomes in Adult Fontan Patients with Atrial Tachyarrhythmias
Conclusions CA and FC operations are associated with less recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmia compared with AAD. Atrial tachyarrhythmias are more likely to recur in patients with a longer history of the arrhythmia, and are associated with more adverse events. Early referral to a specialty center for these interventions should be considered.

Relationship between aetiology and left ventricular systolic dysfunction in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Conclusions In adults with HCM, LV systolic dysfunction is more frequent in those with rare phenocopies. When combined with age at presentation, it is a marker for specific aetiologies and is associated with poorer long-term survival.

Dynamic Changes in Aortic Vascular Stiffness in Patients Bridged to Transplant  With Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
Conclusions Aortic stiffness is markedly increased immediately post-OHT among patients bridged with CF-LVADs, with attenuation of this increased stiffness over the first year after transplant. These results suggest that aortic vascular properties are dynamic and may be influenced by alterations in flow pulsatility. As more patients are supported with CF-LVADs and as newer pump technology attempts to modulate pulsatility, further research examining the role of alterations in flow patterns on vascular function and the potential resultant systemic sequelae are needed. Outcomes of Asian-Americans Undergoing Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantations as a Bridge to Transplant or Destination Therapy: An INTERMACS Analysis
Previous studies have demonstrated significant differences between Asians and Caucasian white populations in their propensity for stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, inflammation, bleeding and thrombosis. Therefore, we hypothesized that Asian Americans with end stage heart failure undergoing treatment with durable left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) exhibit a different morbidity and mortality risk profile when compared to non-Asian and white Americans populations.

Assessment of stability of CD34+ cell products enriched by immunoselection from peripheral blood mononuclear cells during refrigerated storage
Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is generally used for haematopoietic regeneration after myeloablative therapy [1]. Therapeutic effects of stem cells in other diseases like heart failure [2,3], bone healing [4], chronic spinal cord injuries [5], retinal disorders [6], stroke [7], refractory Crohn disease [8] and multiple sclerosis [9] are being investigated in various clinical studies. Haematopoietic stem cells are most often collected in a mononuclear cell fraction by leukapheresis from peripheral blood.

Outcomes of Berlin Heart EXCOR ® pediatric ventricular assist device support in patients with restrictive and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
This study reviews the North American experience with Berlin Heart EXCOR® ventricular assist device implants in children with such physiology. The Berlin Heart clinical database was reviewed. Patients with primary diastolic dysfunction are included in this study. Twenty pediatric patients with restrictive cardiomyopathy (n = 13), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (n = 3), or congenital heart disease with restrictive physiology (n = 4) who were supported with EXCOR® were identified. Of these, nine (45%) were successfully bridged to transplant, one (5%) weaned from support, and 10 (50%) died after support was withdrawn. Of...

How Genomic Research is Changing Heart Care
Genomic testing is most frequently associated with cancer testing, but this area of research is beginning to make an impact on cardiovascular care. A recent scientific statement by the American Heart Association shined a spotlight on how the expressed genome can potentially be used to diagnose diseases and predict who will develop diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, heart failure, and arrhythmias. According to the statement, scientists now have the ability to address disease at many levels that were inaccessible during the past century. This includes the genome, transcriptome, epigenome, proteome, metab...

Impact of age, sex, therapeutic intent, race and severity of advanced heart failure on short-term principal outcomes in the MOMENTUM 3 trial
In this study we sought to evaluate the individual and interactive effects of pre-specified patient subgroups (age, sex, race, therapeutic intent [bridge to transplant/bridge to candidacy/destination therapy] and severity of illness) on primary end-point outcomes in MOMENTUM 3 patients implanted with HM3 and HMII devices.

Developing a New Score: How Machine Learning Improves Risk Prediction
Composite risk scores have been used for decades to identify disease risk and health status in the general population. However, current approaches often fail to identify people who would benefit from intervention or recommend unnecessary intervention. Machine learning promises to improve accuracy, ensuring targeted treatment for patients that need it and reducing unnecessary intervention. Framingham Risk Score, the gold standard for predicting the likelihood of heart disease, predicts hospitalizations with about 56% accuracy. It uses factors such as age, gender, smoking, cholesterol levels, and systolic blood pressure to...

Hospitalizations for cardiovascular disease after liver transplantation in the United States
Conclusions: CVD after liver transplant is evolving and responsible for growing rates of inpatient care. Transplant hospitals are associated with poor outcomes, even after risk adjustment for patient and hospital characteristics, which may be attributable to selective referral of certain patient phenotypes, but could also be related to differences in quality of care. Further study is warranted. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
