Prediabetes
is a complex multifactorial metabolic disorder that extends beyond glucose control. Current studies have found that microvascular disease (neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy), macrovascular disease (stroke, coronary artery disease, and peripheral vascular disease), periodontal disease, cognitive dysfunction, blood pressure changes, obstructive sleep apnea, low testosterone level, fatty liver disease, and cancer are some of conditions that are present with the onset of glycemic dysregulation. The presence of prediabetes increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes 3-fold to 10-fold. The identification and treatme...

Impact of testosterone replacement therapy on thromboembolism, heart disease, and obstructive sleep apnea in men
ConclusionsThis study adds to growing evidence that cardiovascular risk from TRT may be less than once feared. The increased risk of sleep apnea in men using TRT is noteworthy. The study strengths include the large number of healthy and young men exposed to TRT. Limitations include the retrospective study design inability to account for granular details of TRT use such as dosage, specific forms of TRT and serum testosterone levels pre‐ and post‐TRT.This article is protected by copyright. Adverse effects of doping with anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) in competitive athletics, recreational sports and bodybuilding.
Authors: Vorona E, Nieschlag E Abstract Despite the fact that sports organizations and legislators have introduced various mechanisms to discourage athletes from using performance and appearance enhancing substances a high percentage of athletes admits to their unabated application. In competitive athletics, bodybuilding and in recreational sports anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) continue to be the substances most abused. This review summarizes the side effects of AAS abuse on organs and system functions in both sexes. High doses of AAS cause a significant increase of erythrocytes und haemoglobin concentration, w...

Impact of testosterone replacement therapy on thromboembolism, heart disease and obstructive sleep apnoea in men
ConclusionsThis study adds to growing evidence that the cardiovascular risk associated with TRT may be lower than once feared. The elevated risk of OSA in men using TRT is noteworthy.

Testosterone Therapy in Men With Hypogonadism: An Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline.
Conclusions: We recommend making a diagnosis of hypogonadism only in men with symptoms and signs consistent with testosterone (T) deficiency and unequivocally and consistently low serum T concentrations. We recommend measuring fasting morning total T concentrations using an accurate and reliable assay as the initial diagnostic test. We recommend confirming the diagnosis by repeating the measurement of morning fasting total T concentrations. In men whose total T is near the lower limit of normal or who have a condition that alters sex hormone-binding globulin, we recommend obtaining a free T concentration using either equil...

B0 Vs. Non-B0 Genotype: Differences in Non-Transfusion-Dependent Thalassemia Patients
Conclusions: Heart remodelling related to a high cardiac output state cardiomyopathy was more pronounced in patients with homozygous β°/β° genotype. Osteoporososis was significantly more frequent in patients with homozygous β°/β° genotype, treated for more than two-thirds with DFO therapy. These data support the knowledge of different phenotypic groups in the management of NTDT patients.TableDisclosuresPepe: Chiesi Farmaceutici S.p.A., ApoPharma Inc., and Bayer: Other: No profit support.

An update on clinical, pathological, diagnostic, and therapeutic perspectives of childhood leukodystrophies.
Authors: Ashrafi MR, Amanat M, Garshasbi M, Kameli R, Nilipour Y, Heidari M, Rezaei Z, Tavasoli AR Abstract Introduction: Leukodystrophies constitute heterogenous group of rare heritable disorders primarily affecting the white matter of central nervous system. These conditions are often under-appreciated among physicians. The first clinical manifestations of leukodystrophies are often nonspecific and can occur in different ages from neonatal to late adulthood periods. The diagnosis is, therefore, challenging in most cases.Area covered: Herein, the authors discuss different aspects of leukodystrophies. The authors used...
