Thrombocytopenia and In-hospital Mortality Risk among Ischemic Stroke Patients
Background: Thrombocytopenia has been associated with increased mortality in nonstroke conditions. Because its role in acute ischemic stroke is less well understood, we sought to determine whether thrombocytopenia at admission for acute ischemic stroke was associated with in-hospital mortality. Methods: We used data from a retrospective cohort of stroke patients (1998-2003) at 5 U.S. hospitals. Risk factors considered included conditions that can lead to thrombocytopenia (e.g., liver disease), increase bleeding risk (e.g., hemophilia), medications with antiplatelet effects (e.g., aspirin), and known predictors of mortality ...

A case report and experience of endovascular treatment for a patient with hemophilia who had a hyperacute ischemic stroke
No previous study has reported endovascular treatment (EVT) in a patient with hemophilia who had an acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Herein, we report the case of a patient with hemophilia A who presented with hyperacute stroke due to a near occlusion of the proximal internal carotid artery (ICA).A 54-year-old man was admitted to our emergency department with a sudden onset of left-sided weakness that occurred 4 hours prior to admission. He had been diagnosed with congenital hemophilia A during his childhood.

Increased Prevalence of Early Post Stroke Depression Among Single Women after Ischemic Stroke. (P5.147)
Conclusions:PSD is very frequent, affecting nearly half of female stroke patients, particularly if they are single. The symptoms may be somatic, affecting energy levels and sleep. Identification of patients at high risk of PSD will enable early treatment, with improved outcomes and quality of life.Study Supported by: Ethel and James Flinn FoundationDisclosure: Dr. Kucab has received personal compensation for activities with National Hemophilia Foundation as a consultant. Prevalence of selected bleeding and thrombotic events in  persons with hemophilia versus the general population: A scoping review
Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2022 Dec 9;7(1):100007. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2022.100007. eCollection 2023 Jan.ABSTRACTLife expectancy for persons with hemophilia has increased over recent decades due to advances in treatment practice and patient care. Those with hemophilia are now more likely to be affected by conditions associated with aging, such as myocardial infarction, hemorrhagic/ischemic stroke, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and intracranial hemorrhage. Here, we describe the results of a literature search designed to summarize current data on the prevalence of the above selected bleeding and thrombotic events ...

Gene breakthrough boosts hope of drug for blood diseases
Discovery could prevent lethal blood clots and help children with rare platelet function disorderNoah Edwards is four years old and suffers from a disorder that prevents his blood from clotting. He bleeds profusely when cut and his face and body are easily bruised. His condition, called platelet function disorder, is a constant worry for his mother, Ruby. However, thanks to Noah's involvement in a remarkable project, funded by the British Heart Foundation, his prospects of leading a normal life have received a major boost.Researchers at Birmingham University have uncovered the genetic roots of platelet function disorder, a ...

Cardiovascular comorbidities are increased in US patients with haemophilia A: a retrospective database analysis
This study evaluated the prevalence of cardiovascular comorbidities among USA males with haemophilia A, relative to an unaffected general male population with similar characteristics. Males with haemophilia A and continuous insurance coverage were identified by ICD‐9‐CM code 286.0 (1 January 2007–31 December 2009) using the MarketScan® Commercial and Medicare Research Databases. Individuals with haemophilia A were exact matched 1:3 with males without a diagnosis of haemophilia A. The prevalence of cardiovascular comorbidities identified by ICD‐9‐CM code was determined for matched cohorts. Of the study population...

Atrial fibrillation in patients with haemophilia: a cross‐sectional evaluation in Europe
Summary Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common health problem in the general population, but data on prevalence or management in patients with haemophilia (PWH) are lacking. The aims of this study were to analyse the prevalence of AF and risk factors for stroke using a cross‐sectional pan‐European design and to document current anticoagulation practice. The ADVANCE Working Group consists of members from 14 European haemophilia centres. Each centre retrieved data on their PWH with AF. From the total of 3952 adult PWH, 33 had AF with a mean age of 69 years (IQR 62–76). Haemophilia was severe in seven (21%), moderate in ...

Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction in gene therapy: A new tool to cure human diseases
Publication date: Available online 20 August 2016 Source:Genes & Diseases Author(s): Jun Wu, Ren-Ke Li Human gene therapy has made significant advances in less than two decades. Within this short period of time, gene therapy has proceeded from the conceptual stage to technology development and laboratory research, and finally to clinical trials for the treatment of a variety of deadly diseases. Cardiovascular disease, cancer, and stroke are leading causes of death worldwide. Despite advances in medical, interventional, radiation and surgical treatments, the mortality rate remains high, and the need for novel thera...

Risk of major comorbidities among workers with hemophilia: A 14-year population-based study
In this study, we investigated the incidence of comorbidities and their risk factors among workers with hemophilia. The study compared the incidence and risk factors of the major comorbidities of 411 workers with hemophilia enrolled in Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database between 1997 and 2010 with an age- and sex-matched general population. Compared with the general population, workers with hemophilia had higher risks for hemorrhagic stroke, arthritis/arthropathy, and knee/hip replacement among workers with hemophilia after multivariate adjustment, with hazard ratios (95% CI) of 4.60 (2.81–7.53), 4.03 ...

Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure in patients with primary hemostasis disorders and atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsPercutaneous LAAC in primary HD carriers appeared as safe and as effective as in overall LAAC population for stroke and bleeding prevention at midterm follow-up.Graphical abstractPercutaneous left atrial appendage closure in patients with atrial fibrillation and primary hemostasis disorders. The percutaneous LAAC in primary hemostasis disorders and AF carriers requires a multidisciplinary approach. Cardiologist, anesthesiologist, and hematologist discussion is a cornerstone to assess anticoagulant contraindication, LAAC feasibility, periprocedural management, and follow-up(high). This multidisciplinary care is i...
