AbstractA right-handed woman in her 80s was admitted to the emergency department 1 h after sudden-onset global aphasia and right-sided hemiparesis. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is associated with stroke history in a reverse J-shape
ConclusionUsing data from a large, cross-sectional cohort program, we found that circulating 25(OH)D was related to stroke history in a reverse J-shaped manner. Given how the causal relationship between circulating 25(OH)D and history of stroke has not been established, more high-quality evidence based on the reverse J-shaped feature is needed to elucidate the link between vitamin D and stroke risk, and the effect of vitamin D supplements on stroke prevention.

Association between white matter hyperintensity volume and social functioning limitations among stroke survivors
Existing literature on white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV) in stroke patients has rarely focused on post-stroke outcomes related to social functioning limitations, such as transportation, social interaction, food preparation, grocery shopping, and housekeeping. Using prospective data from the VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL (VITAL) study, we evaluated the association between WMHV and social functioning limitations among 151 ischemic stroke patients.

Vitamin D supplementation and risk of stroke: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionOur study revealed that additional vitamin D supplementation did not reduce the risk of stroke. Therefore, additional RCTs of similar design should not be encouraged to assess any association between vitamin D supplementation and reduced stroke risk.

Use of Antipsychotics is Negatively Associated with Muscle Strength in Older Adults with Sarcopenia after Stroke
The mainstay of treatment for sarcopenia is muscle mass and strength increase through exercise and nutritional intervention.1 A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of combined exercise and nutritional therapy for sarcopenia in older people showed that this combination may have positive effects on improving walking speed within 3 months of intervention.2 Furthermore, supplementation with whey protein, essential amino acids, and vitamin D, in conjunction with age-appropriate exercise has been reported to boost fat-free mass and strength.

Effect of Vitamin D Supplementation on the Prognosis of Post-stroke Fatigue: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusions: Our results indicated that vitamin D supplementation could improve fatigue symptoms and neurological outcomes in PSF patients with vitamin D deficiency. Subject to replication in other settings, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) might be undertaken to validate the potential beneficial impact of vitamin D supplementation in post-stroke patients found to be vitamin D deficient.

Low vitamin D levels and the long ‐term functional outcome of stroke up to 5 years
ConclusionVitamin D level less than 38.4  nmol/L at admission is a potential risk biomarker for poor functional outcome at 5-year prognosis in AIS patients, which might provide new ideas for the prognostic assessment of stroke.

Association between Vitamin D and Risk of Stroke: A PRISMA-Compliant Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Our analysis indicated that lower circulating level of vitamin D was associated with an elevated risk of stroke, but extra supplement of vitamin D failed to show benefit in decreasing the risk of stroke. Role of vitamin D in cerebrovascular disease
Conclusions: After reviewing current literature on the subject, we conclude that there are some data to suggest the role of vitamin D in patients with stroke but it cannot be concluded as a risk factor for stroke. Larger population-based studies are needed to confirm the causative role of vitamin D in stroke.
