Role of Vitamins in Cardiovascular Health: Know Your Facts - Part 1
Curr Vasc Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.2174/1570161121666230912155548. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality world-wide, thus it is important to adopt preventive interventions. Observational data demonstrating CV benefits of vitamin supplements, advanced by self-proclaimed experts have resulted in ~50% of Americans reporting the use of multivitamins for health promotion; this practice has led to a multi-billion-dollar business of the multivitamin-industry. However, the data on the extensive use of multivitamins show no consistent benefit for CVD preve...

Role of Vitamins in Cardiovascular Health: Know Your Facts-Part 2
Curr Vasc Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.2174/1570161121666230911115725. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity/mortality world-wide, hence preventive interventions are crucial. Observational data showing beneficial CV-effects of vitamin supplements, promoted by self-proclaimed experts, have led to ~50% of Americans using multivitamins; this practice has culminated into a multi-billion-dollar business. However, robust evidence is lacking, and certain vitamins might incur harm. This two-part review focuses on the attributes or concerns about specific vitamin consumption on ...

Role of vitamin D in the association between pre-stroke sleep quality and poststroke depression and anxiety
CONCLUSION: Decreased serum vitamin D levels at admission are associated with a high risk for PSD and PSA in patients with poor pre-stroke sleep quality during the early stages of AIS.PMID:37542680 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-023-02894-1

Quiz case: a clinical reasoning challenge in the emergency stroke setting
AbstractA right-handed woman in her 80s was admitted to the emergency department 1 h after sudden-onset global aphasia and right-sided hemiparesis. Medical history included arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, aortic stenosis, osteoporosis, and recent pulmonary embolism. Medication consisted of apixaban, bisoprolol, hydrochlorothiazide, allopurinol, fenofibrate, and vitamin D. Vital parameters (blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation) and glycemia were all within normal range. Electrocardiogram showed a first-degree atrioventricular block. The patient was promptly transported to the e...

Increased Serum Levels of IL-1 β after Ischemic Stroke are Inversely Associated with Vitamin D
CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke correlates positively with IL-1β and negatively with VitD levels. The speculated role of VitD deficiency in the evolution and severity of stroke may be justified by its role in the modification of inflammation.PMID:37431715 | DOI:10.22034/iji.2023.96384.2432

Vitamin D supplements may cut risk of heart attacks, trial suggests
The largest study of its kind may prove a link between vitamin D levels and the risk of cardiovascular diseaseVitamin D supplements may cut the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attacks in older people, according to the largest study of its kind.Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the main causes of death globally. The number of cardiovascular events is predicted to surge as populations continue to age and chronic diseases become more common.Continue reading...

GSE190171 VDR-dependent signaling modulates neuroinflammation in the acute phase of ischemic stroke
Contributors : P Cui ; F Xu ; W Lu ; J HaoSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusVDR deficiency in microglia markedly aggravated infarct volumes, neurological deficits, and neuroinflammation after cerebral ischemia. To investigate the role of VDR in microglia-regulated neuroinflammation, we performed RNA-seq analysis on microglia isolated from poststroke microglia-conditional VDR knockout (Vdr-cKO) mice and littermate controls. VDR elimination dramatically alters the gene expression profiles of postischemic microglia, implying that vitamin D signaling play a crucial role in m...
