Estimated carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity has similar predictive value as measured carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity
Conclusion: ePWV predicted major cardiovascular events independently of SCORE, FRS and cfPWV indicating that these traditional risk scores have underestimated the complicated impact of age and blood pressure on arterial stiffness and cardiovascular risk.

Brunei epidemiological stroke study: patterns of hypertension and stroke risk
Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension in Brunei is high in both women and men. Information campaigns and prevention programs are needed to be able to cope with the increasing problem of hypertension and resulting diseases like stroke in Brunei in the near future.

Impact of hypertension on mortality and cardiovascular disease burden in patients with cardiovascular risk factors from a general practice setting: the ESCARVAL-risk study
Conclusion: Our results highlight the relevance of hypertension as main risk factor for mortality and cardiovascular events in a real-life setting. Although our data support the ongoing need of cardiovascular risk factors prevention, intensified actions for primary prevention of hypertension show potential to largely reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease.

Aortic root dimension and arterial stiffness in arterial hypertension: the Campania Salute Network
Objectives: The relation between aortic root dimension (ARD) and measures of arterial stiffness is uncertain. Accordingly, we studied the relation between ARD and an estimate of arterial stiffness in 12 392 hypertensive patients (age 53 ± 12 years, 43% women) free of prevalent cardiovascular disease and with ejection fraction at least 50%, from the Campania Salute Network Registry. Prognostic value of longitudinal strain of subepicardial myocardium in patients with hypertension
Conclusion: EpiLS was the only independent prognostic factor in regularly-treated hypertensive patients. Our results indicated that involvement of subepicardial myocardium may infer worse prognosis of hypertensive heart disease.

Effects of blood pressure lowering on outcome incidence in hypertension: 7. Effects of more vs. less intensive blood pressure lowering and different achieved blood pressure levels – updated overview and meta-analyses of randomized trials
Conclusion: Updating of previous meta-analyses indicates that more vs. less intense BP lowering can reduce not only stroke and coronary events, but also cardiovascular mortality. Including data from recent RCTs also shows that all major outcomes can be reduced by lowering SBP a few mmHg below vs. above 130 mmHg, but absolute risk reduction becomes smaller, suggesting patients at lower initial SBP were at a lower level of cardiovascular risk.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers and the risk of major adverse cardiac events in patients with diabetes and prior stroke: a nationwide study
Conclusion: Our study supports the hypothesis that the risks of MACEs and two additional secondary outcomes in patients with diabetes who survived ischemic stroke did not differ according to ACEI versus ARB use.

Effects of blood pressure-lowering treatment. 6. Prevention of heart failure and new-onset heart failure – meta-analyses of randomized trials
Conclusion: BP-lowering treatment effectively prevents ’new onset’ heart failure. It is suggested that BP lowering by calcium antagonists is effective as BP lowering by other drugs in preventing ‘new-onset’ heart failure, unless the trial design creates an unbalance against calcium antagonists.

A stop-codon of the phosphodiesterase 11A gene is associated with elevated blood pressure and measures of obesity
