Epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in Japan: An overview study
J Cardiol. 2023 Aug 15:S0914-5087(23)00200-9. doi: 10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.08.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs), such as heart disease and stroke, have a significant impact on life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, and medical costs in Japan. Each prefecture is currently promoting measures in accordance with the Japanese National Plan for Promotion of Measures Against Cerebrovascular and Cardiovascular Disease, which was established by the government. In recent years, the crude mortality rate of heart disease in Japan has been increasing year by year with the aging population. Meanwhile, the ...

Can a best practice advisory improve anticoagulation prescribing to reduce stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation?
CONCLUSIONS: A BPA added to an AF decision support tool improved anticoagulation therapy among AF patients in a primary care academic health system setting.PMID:37579873 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.08.005

Cognition and education benefits of increased hemoglobin and blood oxygenation in children with sickle cell disease
by Joanna P. MacEwan, Allison A. King, Andy Nguyen, Anuj Mubayi, Irene Agodoa, Kim Smith-Whitley BackgroundAmong individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD), decreased hemoglobin is associated with lower oxygen saturation (SpO2) and increased risk of stroke, both of which are associated with lower intelligence quotient (IQ) scores. Thus, increasing hemoglobin and SpO2 in individuals with SCD may increase IQ and educational attainment. MethodsA cohort simulation model was built to determine academic performance and educational attainment based on cognitive function (measured by IQ) of a pediatric SCD cohort randomly assigned...

Where You Live Can Shape How Alzheimer ’ s Affects You
The FDA in mid-July for the first time ever approved an Alzheimer’s drug, Leqembi. The annual price-tag will run patients $26,500. The same week, the Alzheimer’s Association for the first time ever released county-level data to identify which communities are most struggling with the disease. 6.7 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease and 134,000 of them will die because of it each year. We’ve known these aggregate numbers for a while now, but with new data and new drugs, healthcare specialists can now better target attention and resources. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] ...

Multiple sclerosis lesions that impair memory map to a connected memory circuit
ConclusionsLesion locations associated with memory dysfunction in MS map onto a specific brain circuit centered on the hippocampus. Lesion damage to this circuit fully mediated associations between lesion volume and memory. A circuit-based approach to mapping MS symptoms based on lesions visible on standard structural imaging may prove useful for localization and prognosis of higher order deficits in MS.

Ticagrelor or Clopidogrel as Antiplatelet Agents in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Cardiovascular Disease: A Meta-analysis
ConclusionsWhen compared with clopidogrel, even though ticagrelor was not associated with higher risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes in these patients with CKD, it was associated with significantly higher BARC bleeding. Therefore, the safety outcomes of ticagrelor still require further evaluation in patients with CKD. Nevertheless, this hypothesis should only be confirmed with more powerful results that could usually only be achieved using large-scale randomized trials.

O-042 Complications of DAPT cessation at 3 months versus 6 months after flow diversion of unruptured intracranial aneurysms
ConclusionsOnly 0.6% (n=1) of patients exhibited complications after 3 month follow-up. We conclude that DAPT duration of 3 months after endoluminal flow diversion of unruptured cerebral aneurysms of the anterior circulation is not associated with increased rates of hemorrhagic or thromboembolic complications compared to a traditional 6-month regimen.Disclosures S. E-219 Direct vs indirect revascularization for moyamoya: a large multicenter study
ConclusionSince both modalities showed comparable rates of overall total strokes, both modalities of revascularization can be performed depending on the patient’s risk assessment.Abstract E-219 Table 1Direct Indirect Effect variable Value (95% confidence interval) P-value Primary Outcome Symptomatic stroke, n (%) 23/198 (11.6) 19/198 (9.6) Odds ratio 1.238 (0.651 - 2.354) 0.514 Secondary Outcomes Symptomatic ischemic stroke, n (%) 23/198 (11.6) 16/198 (8.1) Odds ratio 1.495 (0.764 - 2.924) 0.240 Symptomatic hemorrhagic stroke, n (%) 0/198 (0) 3/198 (1.5) –– –– 0.248 Peri-operative stroke,...

Scientific Landscape of Oxidative Stress in Stroke: From a Bibliometric Analysis to an in-Depth Review
Neurochem Res. 2023 Jul 28. doi: 10.1007/s11064-023-03999-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke is an acute cerebrovascular disease resulting from either obstruction or rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. Oxidative stress (OS), referred to a status where cellular oxidative capacities overwhelm antioxidative defenses, is involved in the pathophysiology of stroke. The bibliometric analysis and in-depth review aim to depict the research trend of OS in stroke. Relevant scientific publications were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Scientific landscape of OS in stroke was illustrated by general qu...
