Blood Flow Restriction Exercise Attenuates the Exercise-Induced Endothelial Progenitor Cell Response in Healthy, Young Men
Conclusion In summary, this is the first study to show that BFR exercise did not augment EPC response to exercise, and in fact blunted the EPC response to low load unilateral KE exercise in young, healthy males. Ethics Statement This study was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of Edinburgh Napier University Research and Ethics Governance Committee. The study was ethically approved by Edinburgh Napier University Research and Ethics Governance Committee. All participants gave written informed consent in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Author Contributions MR, RM, AP, CW, GF-J designed the s...

YiQiFuMai Powder Injection Attenuates Coronary Artery Ligation-Induced Heart Failure Through Improving Mitochondrial Function via Regulating ROS Generation and CaMKII Signaling Pathways
This study was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, National Institutes of Health.” The protocol was approved by the “China Pharmaceutical University.” Surgical Preparation The mice were anesthetized with chloral hydrate (4% chloral hydrate, ip). The HF model was induced by CAL as previously reported (Gao et al., 2010). Successful ligation of the coronary artery was confirmed by the occurrence of ST-segment elevation in electrocardiogram. Sham operated mice were performed the same process except left CAL. After ligation, the h...

Cardiovascular Programming During and After Diabetic Pregnancy: Role of Placental Dysfunction and IUGR
This study demonstrated that the incidence of ischemic heart disease and death were three times higher among men with low birth weight compared to men with high birth weight (5). Epidemiological investigations of adults born at the time of the Dutch famine between 1944 and 1945 revealed an association between maternal starvation and a low infant birth weight with a high incidence of hypertension and coronary heart disease in these adults (23). Furthermore, Painter et al. reported the incidence of early onset coronary heart disease among persons conceived during the Dutch famine (24). In that regard, Barker's findin...

Hospital costs associated with intraoperative hypotension among non-cardiac surgical patients in the US: a simulation model.
CONCLUSIONS: The model results suggest improved intraoperative hypotension control in a hospital with annual volume 10,000 non-cardiac surgical patients is associated with mean cost reductions ranging from $1.2 to $4.6 million per year. Since the magnitude of the RCT mean estimate is similar to the unadjusted observational model, the institutional costs are likely at the upper end of this range. Cardiac Complications in the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Patient
AbstractPurpose of ReviewDue to advancements in oncologic treatment strategies and techniques, the number of survivors who have undergone hematopoetic stem cell transplant (HCT) continues to increase in the United States; this number is projected to reach 502,000 by the year 2030. There is significant interest within the field of cardio-oncology to identify cardiotoxicity and cardiovascular disease in the HCT population. Epidemiologic studies analyzing both short- and long-term cardiovascular effects, risk stratification modeling, cardioprotective strategies, and expert consensus documents for cardiotoxicity surveillance r...

Estimating Quality of Life Decrements Due to Diabetes Complications in the United States: The Health Utility Index (HUI) Diabetes Complication Equation
ConclusionsMacrovascular and microvascular complications caused QALY decrements in patients with type 2 diabetes. While only part of the total impaired QALY is experienced during the event year, further QALY decrements for successive years were quite substantial.

Nearly Half of U.S. Adults have Heart or Blood Vessel Disease
A new report estimates that nearly half of all U.S. adults have some form of heart or blood vessel disease, a medical milestone that's mostly due to recent guidelines that expanded how many people have high blood pressure. The American Heart Association said Thursday that more than 121 million adults had cardiovascular disease in 2016. Taking out those with only high blood pressure leaves 24 million, or 9 percent of adults, who have other forms of disease such as heart failure or clogged arteries. Measuring the burden of diseases shows areas that need to improve, the heart association's chief science and medical officer, D...

Bariatric surgery reduces incidence of atrial fibrillation: a propensity score –matched analysis
Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects 33.5 million individuals worldwide [1] and it is estimated that the prevalence of AF in the United States will increase 2- to 3-fold over the next 50 years [2]. Patients with AF are more likely to experience a variety of negative health outcomes, including myocardial infarction, heart failure, and stroke [3,4]. In addition to these major health risks, there is a significant economic burden associated with AF, amounting to as much as $26 billion in annual healthcare expenditures in the United States alone [5].

Preventing Broken Hearts
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains the most frequent cause of death in women throughout the world. More than 250,000 women die annually in the United States from ASCVD; mortality and morbidity have significantly increased since 1980.1,2 Women are more likely to develop heart failure or die within 5 years of a myocardial infarction (MI) and have a higher risk of stroke than men.2 Although it has been known for some time that women are at significant risk for developing ASCVD, women remain untreated or undertreated.

Genotype and Lifetime Burden of Disease in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: Insights from the Sarcomeric Human Cardiomyopathy Registry (SHaRe).
Conclusions: The cumulative burden of HCM is substantial and dominated by heart failure and atrial fibrillation occurring many years following diagnosis. Young age of diagnosis and the presence of a sarcomere mutation are powerful predictors of adverse outcomes. These findings highlight the need for close surveillance throughout life, and the need to develop disease-modifying therapies. PMID: 30297972 [PubMed - in process]
