Stroke epidemiology in southern Brazil: Investigating the relationship between stroke severity, hospitalization costs, and health-related quality of life
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2022 Jun 13;94(2):e20211492. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202220211492. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTWe aimed with the present study to fill the gap on the performance and safety of stroke management and the costs related to hospitalizations, the relevant comorbidities associated with stroke patients, and the stroke patient outcomes health-related quality of life (HRQOL) progress. Our study investigated the clinical, neurological, and social impact of stroke in 220 patients in a tertiary hospital located in the countryside of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Examining the factors associated with functional capacity of community-dwelling older adults using the ICF framework: a cross-sectional study from the Frailty in Brazilian Older Adults Study (FIBRA)
CONCLUSION: Functional capacity of older adults is associated with some non-modifiable factors, such as age and sex. The modifiable factors must be addressed by health professionals and policymakers in the geriatric area, especially depression, obesity, physical inactivity, and social support.PMID:35659442 | DOI:10.1080/09593985.2022.2079574

Role of aerobic physical training on cardiac autonomic and morphophysiological dysfunction in hypertensive rats subjected to ovarian hormone deprivation
Braz J Med Biol Res. 2022 May 16;55:e11916. doi: 10.1590/1414-431X2022e11916. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTHere we investigated the effects of physical training on cardiovascular autonomic control and cardiac morphofunctional parameters in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) subjected to ovarian hormone deprivation. Forty-eight 10-week-old SHRs were divided into two groups: ovariectomized (OVX, n=24) and sham (SHAM, n=24). Half of each group (n=12) was trained by swimming for 12 weeks (OVX-T and SHAM-T). Cardiac morphology and functionality were assessed using echocardiography, and autonomic parameters were assessed using d...

Short-term outcomes of transfemoral carotid artery stenting and carotid endarterectomy in symptomatic patients: data from a multicentric prospective registry in Brazil
Transfemoral carotid artery stenting (TF-CAS) and carotid endarterectomy (CEA) are alternative strategies for stroke prevention in patients with atherosclerotic carotid disease. Since their main objective is to prevent future ischemic events, regular reassessment of the outcomes is mandatory for providing the best therapy.

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 5651: Temporal Trend of the Prevalence of Modifiable Risk Factors of Stroke: An Ecological Study of Brazilians between 2006 and 2012
This study aimed to analyze the temporal trend of the prevalence of modifiable risk factors of stroke from 2006 to 2012. This ecological study was conducted by secondary analysis in May 2018, using data from the surveillance of risk factors and protection for chronic diseases by telephone inquiry (VIGITEL) available in the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). The modifiable risk factors of stroke in Brazilians were systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, abusive alcohol consumption, overweight, and obesity. Overall, there was a significant increase in the risk factors of diabetes (&a...

Awareness towards stroke among high school students in Brazil: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: There was a knowledge deficit with regard to recognizing stroke and activating the emergency medical services. The findings apply to the sample investigated and suggest that there is a need for stroke educational interventions, starting in high school.PMID:35508010 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2021.0659.R2.13102021
