Prevalence of chronic diseases and ownership of health insurance among the elderly: comparison of data from the Brazilian National Health Survey of 2013 and 2019
This study aimed to estimate and compare the prevalence of chronic diseases among the elderly, according to the possession of a health plan in 2013 and 2019. This is a population-based cross-sectional study with data from elderly people (age ≥ 60 years) from the Brazilian National Health Survey (2013: n = 11,177; 2019: n = 22,728). The prevalence of self-reported chronic diseases and adjusted prevalence ratios were estimated, according to health plan ownership (medical and/or dental) and by year. In the period, increased prevalence was observed for hypertension (PR = 1.11; 95%CI: 1.06-1.16), diabetes (PR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1...

Modeling functional network topology following stroke through graph theory: functional reorganization and motor recovery prediction
Braz J Med Biol Res. 2022 Aug 15;55:e12036. doi: 10.1590/1414-431X2022e12036. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTThe study of functional reorganization following stroke has been steadily growing supported by advances in neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Concomitantly, graph theory has been increasingly employed in neuroscience to model the brain's functional connectivity (FC) and to investigate it in a variety of contexts. The aims of this study were: 1) to investigate the reorganization of network topology in the ipsilesional (IL) and contralesional (CL) hemispheres of stroke patients wi...

Atherosclerosis risk factor management - what's new for the neurologist?
Arq Neuropsiquiatr. 2022 May;80(5 Suppl 1):88-93. doi: 10.1590/0004-282X-ANP-2022-S102.ABSTRACTStroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and the vast majority can be attributed to modifiable risk factors, mainly behavioral and metabolic. The top six risk factors responsible for cardiovascular mortality in Brazil in 2019 were high systolic blood pressure, inadequate dietary exposure, high body mass index, high LDL cholesterol, high fasting blood glucose levels, and tobacco. We intend to discuss in this paper the evidence and recommendations in the approach of three essential risk factors for patients with a hist...
