Neovasc touts Tiara TMVR success rate in study
A small study of the Neovasc (NSDQ:NVCN) Tiara transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) in high-risk patients revealed a 100% procedural success rate and immediate elimination of mitral regurgitation. Published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, the study also showed no death, myocardial infarction, stroke, major bleeding, or access site complications at 30 days. The twelve patients in the study had had a previous aortic valve replacement. Such patients have been excluded from most TMVR trials because of the potential risks of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction or interaction between the TMVR anch...

How accurately is euthanasia reported on death certificates in a country with legal euthanasia: a population-based study
ConclusionsDeath certificates substantially underestimate the frequency of euthanasia as a cause of death in Belgium. Mortality follow-back studies are essential complementary instruments to examine and monitor the practice of euthanasia more accurately. Death certificate forms may need to be modified and clear guidelines provided to physicians about recording euthanasia to ensure more accurate certification.

Automated RBC exchange compared to manual exchange transfusion for children with sickle cell disease is cost-effective and reduces iron overload.
CONCLUSION: Erythrocytapheresis reduces iron overload and allows a longer interval between procedures without a higher RBC requirement from the second year on aRBX. The cost did not increase as estimated in our Belgian Health Care System. PMID: 29574950 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

NOACs only for those who cannot tolerate a VKA: where is the evidence?
Authors: Bhagirath VC, Cosyns B, Eikelboom JW Abstract The 2016 European Society of Cardiology Guidelines recommend non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) in preference to vitamin K antagonists (VKA) for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation. A recent report from the Belgian Healthcare Knowledge Centre (KCE) raised concerns about the results of the phase 3 randomised trials that led to the approval of the NOACs for this indication and concluded that NOACs should only be used for patients who fail or cannot undergo treatment with a vitamin K antagonist because they cannot achieve stable INR values. ...
