Bioimpedance based determination of cardiac index does not show enough trueness for point of care use in patients with systolic heart failure
AbstractCardiac output (CO) is a key parameter in diagnostics and therapy of heart failure (HF). The thermodilution method (TD) as gold standard for CO determination is an invasive procedure with corresponding risks. As an alternative, thoracic bioimpedance (TBI) has gained popularity for CO estimation as it is non-invasive. However, systolic heart failure (HF) itself might worsen its validity. The present study validated TBI against TD.  In patients with and without systolic HF (LVEF ≤ 50% or>  50% and NT-pro-BNP <  125 pg/ml, respectively) right heart catheterization including TD was performed. TBI (Ta...

International Variability of Renal and Cardiovascular Outcomes and Mortality in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Europe
Conclusion: Our findings show how the longitudinal outcome of patients with type 2 diabetes varies significantly across European countries even after accounting for the distribution of underlying risk factors.Kidney Blood Press Res 2023;48:165 –174

Lessons from the Space-2 trial in preventing carotid artery stroke in medically managed patients
The SPACE-2 trial, led by Dr Tilman Reiff1 from Heidelberg University, was a multi-center, randomized, controlled trial including 36 centers in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. It aimed to directly compare the benefit of intervention vs best medical therapy (BMT) in patients with high-grade asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis. Interventions considered were carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS). Participants were between the ages of 50 and 85  years with at least 70% internal carotid artery stenosis.

The Challenge of Preventing Carotid Artery Stroke in Properly Medically Managed Patients: Lessons From SPACE-2

Patterns of acute ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage in patients with COVID-19
In this study, we sought to investigate associations between neuroimaging findings with clinical, demographic, blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) parameters, pre-existing conditions and the severity of acute COVID-19.Materials and methodsRetrospective multicenter data retrieval from 10 university medical centers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria between February 2020 and September 2021. We included patients with COVID-19, acute neurological symptoms and cranial imaging. We collected demographics, neurological symptoms, COVID-19 severity, results of cranial imaging, blood and CSF parameters during the hospital stay.Resul...

EE283 Health Economic Impact of Medication Non-Adherence to Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Austria
Medication non-adherence is a common and costly problem. EU-wide, non-adherence may lead to almost 200,000 deaths and excess cost of €80–125 billion. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent cardiac arrhythmia, increasing the risk of stroke from three to fivefold and being a leading cause of cerebrovascular mortality and morbidity. Oral anticoagulant medication is recommended to reduce this risk, but medication non-adher ence leads to considerable health-risks and avoidable cost.

Mortality and Morbidity Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Low-Level PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > , BC, NO < sub > 2 < /sub > , and O < sub > 3 < /sub > : An Analysis of European Cohorts in the ELAPSE Project
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and BC was positively associated with natural-cause and cause-specific mortality in the pooled cohort and the administrative cohorts. Associations were found well below current limit values and guidelines for PM2.5 and NO2. Associations tended to be supralinear, with steeper slopes at low exposures with no indication of a threshold. Two-pollutant models documented the importance of characterizing the ambient mixture with both NO2 and PM2.5. We mostly found negative associations with O3. In two-pollutant models with NO2, the negative associations with O3 were attenuated to esse...

GARFIELD-AF: risk profiles, treatment patterns and 2-year outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH) compared to 32 countries in other regions worldwide
ConclusionsSimilarities and dissimilarities in AF management and clinical outcomes are seen in DACH and ORW. The increased use of NOAC was associated with a mismatch of risk-adapted anticoagulation (over-and-undertreatment) in DACH. Suboptimal control of INR requires educational activities in both regional groups. Higher rates of cardiovascular death in DACH may reflect the higher risk profile of these patients and lower rates of non-haemorrhagic stroke could be associated with increased NOAC use.Graphical abstract

Heritability of R2* iron in the basal ganglia and cortex
CONCLUSIONS: Regional brain iron concentrations are mainly driven by genetic factors while environmental factors contribute to a certain extent. Brain iron levels in the basal ganglia and cortex are controlled by distinct sets of genes.PMID:35951362 | DOI:10.18632/aging.204212

E-182 A multicentric experience for the use of flow diverter in the treatment of anterior communicating artery aneurysms
ConclusionFlow diverters appear to be a safe and effective treatment for anterior communicating artery aneurysms, presenting as an alternative strategy in the armamentarium of interventionalist. Mid-term results were favorable, and complication rates were low. Additional studies with longer follow-up time and independent adjudication are warranted to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the technique.Disclosures V. Benalia: None. G. Cortez: None. N. Cardiovascular risk and mortality in patients with hyperuricemia treated with febuxostat or allopurinol: a retrospective nation-wide cohort study in Austria 2014 –2017
AbstractPatients with hyperuricemia and gout are at an increased risk for cardiovascular (CV) disease. Inhibition of the xanthine oxidase with allopurinol or febuxostat have become the mainstay for urate lowering therapy. However, it has been suggested that febuxostat increases the risk for CV mortality as compared to allopurinol. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to assess the CV risk among patients with febuxostat or allopurinol therapy. Patients who initiated urate lowering therapy with febuxostat or allopurinol between 2014 and 2017 were selected from the drug reimbursement database of the Austrian health ...
