Cardiovascular risk and mortality in patients with hyperuricemia treated with febuxostat or allopurinol: a retrospective nation-wide cohort study in Austria 2014 –2017
AbstractPatients with hyperuricemia and gout are at an increased risk for cardiovascular (CV) disease. Inhibition of the xanthine oxidase with allopurinol or febuxostat have become the mainstay for urate lowering therapy. However, it has been suggested that febuxostat increases the risk for CV mortality as compared to allopurinol. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to assess the CV risk among patients with febuxostat or allopurinol therapy. Patients who initiated urate lowering therapy with febuxostat or allopurinol between 2014 and 2017 were selected from the drug reimbursement database of the Austrian health ...

Impacts of changes in environmental exposures and health behaviours due to the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular and mental health: A comparison of Barcelona, Vienna, and Stockholm
Environ Pollut. 2022 Mar 29:119124. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2022.119124. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResponses to COVID-19 altered environmental exposures and health behaviours associated with non-communicable diseases. We aimed to (1) quantify changes in nitrogen dioxide (NO2), noise, physical activity, and greenspace visits associated with COVID-19 policies in the spring of 2020 in Barcelona (Spain), Vienna (Austria), and Stockholm (Sweden), and (2) estimated the number of additional and prevented diagnoses of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, depression, and anxiety based on these changes. We calculated differences in...

Important recommendations of the German-Austrian S3 guidelines on management of extracranial carotid artery stenosis
CONCLUSION: Both CEA and CAS necessitate a critical evaluation of the indications and strict quality criteria. Future studies should evaluate even better selection criteria for an individual, optimal, conservative, operative or endovascular treatment.PMID:35318494 | DOI:10.1007/s00104-022-01622-x

Time trends in stroke severity in the years 2005 to 2020: results from the Austrian Stroke Unit Registry
ConclusionDespite an aging population and generally increasing AF frequency, we observed a consistent trend towards less disabling strokes on admission.

Managing uncertainty: Physicians' decision-making for stroke prevention for patients with atrial fibrillation and intracerebral haemorrhage
Conclusion Physicians described the process of deciding on stroke prevention in patients with AF post-ICH as 'challenging' due to considerable 'clinical equipoise'. Key factors that affected decision-making was patient comorbidities, functional status, and patient willingness to engage with oral anticoagulation therapy. Shared decision-making was believed to be beneficial, but physicians believed that the ultimate responsibility to decide on stroke prevention lay with the clinician.PMID:35253141 | DOI:10.1055/a-1789-4824

Kidney function, brain morphology and cognition in the elderly: sex differences in the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study
Aging (Albany NY). 2022 Jan 13;14(undefined). doi: 10.18632/aging.203829. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImpaired kidney function is associated with structural brain changes and cognitive dysfunction. In the aging kidney, hemodynamic and structural alterations reduce the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Little is known about differences between men and women regarding decline of kidney function and brain damage. In this community-based study, we assessed associations between the eGFR, focal and diffuse brain abnormalities and cognitive functions. Sex-specific effects were analyzed by interaction terms eGFR x sex on brain ...

Feasibility of an individualised, task-oriented, video-supported home exercise programme for arm function in patients in the subacute phase after stroke: protocol of a randomised controlled pilot study
This study follows the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials-Patient-Reported Outcome (PRO) Extension guideline. Ethical approval was received from the Ethics Committee of the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria (1304/2020). Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants prior to data collection. Study results will be disseminated to participating patients, patient organisations, via the clinic’s homepage, relevant conferences and peer-reviewed journals. Trial registration number DRKS-ID: DRKS00023395. Study protocol, second revision, 5 December 2021.

POSA72 Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services for Stroke Patients in Austria
Many patients suffer from acute stroke at a significant distance from dedicated stroke centers. Since onset of advanced stroke care is time critical, the impact of rapid transport provided by helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) on patient outcome merits further evaluation. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a HEMS compared with ground-based ambulance-transport for patients with acute stroke to a stroke unit (SU).

Cardiac Output Measurement in Neonates and Children Using Noninvasive Electrical Bioimpedance Compared With Standard Methods: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis*
Conclusions: The meta-analyses demonstrated no significant difference between means of compared devices (except in neonatal stroke volume studies). The wide range of percentage error reported may be due to heterogeneity of study designs, devices, and populations included. Transthoracic electrical velocimetry/whole body electrical bioimpedance may be acceptable for use in child/adolescent populations, but validity in neonates and congenital heart disease patients remains uncertain. Larger studies in specific clinical contexts with standardized methodologies are required.

Factors influencing serum neurofilament light chain levels in normal aging
CONCLUSIONS: Age is the most important factor influencing sNfL concentrations, getting increasingly relevant in elderly people. BMI further influences sNfL levels, especially at younger age, whereas renal function gets increasingly relevant in the elderly.PMID:34923481 | DOI:10.18632/aging.203790
