Life-threatening heat stroke presenting with ST elevations: a report of consecutive cases during the heat wave in Austria in July 2013.
We report a series of four cases (three exertional, one classic heat stroke) during the heat wave of July 2013 in Austria. All of them presented with a core temperature > 41 °C, central nervous dysfunction, acute respiratory and renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, rhabdomyolysis, and severe electrocardiographic changes, two cases even mimicking ST-elevation myocardial infarction. The patients were cooled to normal temperature with the "Arctic sun" external cooling system within hours. Electrocardiographic changes resolved quickly. All patients primarily recovered from multiple organ dysfunction a...

Thrombolysis in Patients With Mild Stroke: Results From the Austrian Stroke Unit Registry Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In our study, intravenous rt-PA treatment was beneficial for patients with mild deficit. Given the observational nature of these results, our data might serve as an incentive for future randomized controlled trials to provide a basis for optimal patient selection.

Results of the Austrian CT Dose Study 2010: Typical effective Doses of the most frequent CT examinations.
CONCLUSION: Variations between CT operators are generally moderate for most operators, but in some indications the ratio between the minimum and the maximum of average dose to the typical standard patients exceeds a factor of 4 or even 5. Therefore, comparing average doses to Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) and optimizing protocols need to be encouraged. PMID: 24440650 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin type A (Dysport) for the treatment of post-stroke arm spasticity: Results of the German–Austrian open-label post-marketing surveillance prospective study
Abstract: The current practice in Germany and Austria, and the safety and efficacy of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A; Dysport) in the treatment of patients with post-stroke arm spasticity (with no fixed upper-limb contractures), were assessed in this observational prospective non-interventional study. One treatment cycle was documented with assessments at baseline, approximately week 4 (optional), and approximately week 12. Pattern of spasticity, treatment goal, safety and efficacy were recorded. Overall response and goal achievement was rated on a 4-point scale (‘no goal achievement’, ‘goal achievement’, ‘good g...

Out-of-hospital emergency medicine in Germany, Austria and Switzerland : Randomized prospective studies from 1990 to 2012.
CONCLUSION: A significant increase or decrease in the number of prospective randomized clinical trials in the out-of-hospital setting could not be found in German speaking countries despite the fact that the absolute numbers of studies had increased. Only about one prospective, randomized clinical trial with an emergency medicine core tracer diagnosis originated from Germany, Austria and Switzerland per year. Risk factors indicating the need for cranial CT scans in elderly patients with head trauma: an Austrian trial and comparison with the Canadian CT Head Rule.
Conclusions The use of the suggested parameters proved to be superior in the detection of high-risk patients who sustained a mild head trauma compared with the CCHR rules. Further validation of these results in a multicenter setting is needed. Clinical trial registration no.: NCT00451789 ( ClinicalTrials.gov .). PMID: 24313609 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Microstructural tissue damage in normal appearing brain tissue accumulates with Framingham Stroke Risk Profile Score: Magnetization transfer imaging results of the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study
Conclusion: Increasing risk for stroke leads to microstructural brain changes invisible by standard MRI. The validity, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms and the clinical importance of these abnormalities needs to be further determined.

Antihypertensive therapy in diabetes mellitus : 2012 guidelines of the Austrian diabetes association.
[Antihypertensive therapy in diabetes mellitus : 2012 guidelines of the Austrian diabetes association.] Wien Klin Wochenschr. 2012 Dec 19; Authors: Schernthaner G, Drexel H, Rosenkranz AR, Schernthaner GH, Watschinger B Abstract Blood pressure lowering is one of the most important interventions for reducing the vascular complications and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus. Recent studies indicate that the optimal blood pressure level might be in the range between 130-135 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic. Lower blood pressure levels (e.g. 120/80 mmHg) can further reduce the risk for stroke a...

Antiepileptic drug use in Austrian nursing home residents
Abstract: Purpose: Currently around 30% of all newly developed seizures are diagnosed in persons older than 65 years. Five to 17% of nursing home-residents take antiepileptic drugs. The aim of our study was to analyze the type and frequency of prescribed antiepileptic drugs, as well as their indication, co-morbidities and co-medications in institutionalized elderly in Austria. Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study, which included all residents of the seven public nursing homes in Innsbruck, Austria. The data of 828 probands were extracted from the charts at site and maintained anonymously. The data collec...
