Treatment of facial hypertrophic capillary malformations with tumescent-assisted sclerotherapy
Australas J Dermatol. 2022 Apr 12. doi: 10.1111/ajd.13838. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFacial capillary malformations (CMs) become hypertrophic and nodular overtime and pose great therapeutic challenge. Here, we describe safe and effective use of tumescent-assisted sclerotherapy (TAS) in conjunction with yellow vascular laser (577 nm) for the treatment of HFCMs. Three patients underwent TAS were included in the case series, and complete resolution in nodularity was achieved in all patients with TAS, with no major complications such as skin necrosis, distal embolisation, blindness and neurological adverse events such as s...

HDL cholesterol is a protective predictor in the development and progression of retinopathy in type 1 diabetes: a 15-year follow-up study
Despite the declining trend of new visual impairment and blindness due to diabetes in developed countries by the increasing use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents and telemedicine implementation in its systematic screening over the past decade [1,2], diabetic retinopathy (DR), a common and specific microvascular complication of diabetes, is still the leading cause of blindness in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and also related to increased risk of life-threatening systemic vascular complications, including stroke, coronary heart disease, and heart failure [3,4,5].

Audio-visual stimulation for visual compensatory functions in stroke survivors with visual field defect: a systematic review
ConclusionSystematic AV training may improve the processing of visual information by recruiting subcortical pathways, and because most of the patients with visual cortex damage have an intact SC, it might be useful to use the bimodal AV training to activate retinotectal functions. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms supporting the reported positive effects are not currently understood. Systematic functional and/or structural imaging studies may help in understanding the underlying mechanism and inform the design of optimal training paradigms.

Detection and Grading of Hypertensive Retinopathy Using Vessels Tortuosity and Arteriovenous Ratio
AbstractHypertensive retinopathy (HR) refers to changes in the morphological diameter of the retinal vessels due to persistent high blood pressure. Early detection of such changes helps in preventing blindness or even death due to stroke. These changes can be quantified by computing the arteriovenous ratio and the tortuosity severity in the retinal vasculature. This paper presents a decision support system for detecting and grading HR using morphometric analysis of retinal vasculature, particularly measuring the arteriovenous ratio (AVR) and retinal vessel tortuosity. In the first step, the retinal blood vessels are segmen...

What are Some Risk Factors for Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Outcomes?
Discussion “Neonatal encephalopathy, manifesting as altered responsiveness, seizures, apnea and abnormal muscle tone and reflexes, resulting from hypoxic-ischemic injury is termed hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).” Neonatal encephalopathy can be associated with other problems including stroke, hemorrhage, infection, pre-term brain injury and hypoglycemia as some examples. Sometimes more than one of these entities occurs simultaneously such as hypoglycemia and HIE. HIE can result in long-term neurological problems including motor, behavioral, and cognitive problems that can become apparent even years later....

Association of acute retinal necrosis with ischemic stroke
We report the case of a 65-year-old male patient with symptoms of acute retinal necrosis at the Department of Ophthalmology, Semmelweis University. The clinical picture fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and after 3 days of the immediately initiated adequate therapy, contralateral hemiparesis appeared, that was confirmed as an ipsilateral stroke by imaging study. The PCR analysis of an intraocular sample confirmed the presence of VZV. Mild anti-VZV IgA positivity was observed in the cerebrospinal fluid sample. Based on the current ophthalmic disease, the associated stroke along...
