Impact of inflammatory bowel disease on hospital outcomes in acute ischemic stroke: a nationwide cohort study
ConclusionsUC and CD do not appear to be associated with a higher risk of mortality or increased healthcare usage in AIS. AIS risk assessment in patients with IBD is important but should be done in a similar fashion to the general population.

Internal carotid thrombus in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: Two cases.
We report 2 cases of ischemic strokes due to internal carotid thrombus in patients during active phase of IBD. Ulceration of early atherosclerotic plaques activated by a hypercoagulation state may cause a thrombus. A combined therapy with heparin and corticosteroids was used for both our patients. Lysis of the thrombus was obtained after several days without surgical treatment and shown by ultrasonography. These cases highlight an aetiology of stroke in patients with IBD and use of a synergic treatment to respond to hypercoagulability in link with IBD. Benefits and safety of this therapy should be confirmed with clinical s...

Anticardiolipin Antibodies in Children with Helicobacter pylori Infection
ConclusionsIn our particular experience, H. pylori can cause aCL antibody positivity in children and eradication of H. pylori provides the disappearance of these antibodies.

Guidelines for gastroenterological endoscopy in patients undergoing antithrombotic treatment
have been produced by the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society in collaboration with the Japan Circulation Society, the Japanese Society of Neurology, the Japan Stroke Society, the Japanese Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis and the Japan Diabetes Society. Previous guidelines from the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society have focused primarily on prevention of hemorrhage after gastroenterological endoscopy as a result of continuation ofantithrombotic therapy, without considering the associated risk of thrombosis. The new edition of the guidelines includes discussions of gastroenterological hemorrhage assoc...

Cardiovascular Risk in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: It’s a Heartache!
Rungoe C, Basit S, Ranthe MF, et al. Risk of ischemic heart disease in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a nationwide Danish cohort study. Gut 2013;62:689–694. Besides predisposing to venous thromboembolism, chronic systemic inflammation is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis by promoting plaque formation, inducing endothelial dysfunction, and promoting platelet activation and aggregation (N Engl J Med 2005;352:1685–1695). Epidemiologic studies have shown that chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus are associated with premature atherosclerosis an...

Acute bacterial infection negatively impacts cancer specific survival of colorectal cancer patients.
CONCLUSION: Infection and high neutrophil counts are associated with a poorer cancer-specific survival in colorectal cancer patients. PMID: 25320529 [PubMed - in process]

Epidemiology, risk factors and management of cardiovascular diseases in IBD
Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology 12, 26 (2015). doi:10.1038/nrgastro.2014.202 Authors: Siddharth Singh, Iftikhar J. Kullo, Darrell S. Pardi & Edward V. Loftus IBD is an established risk factor for venous thromboembolism. In the past few years, studies have suggested that patients with IBD might also be at an increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. The increased risk is thought to be similar to the level

Impact of Renal Impairment on Cardiovascular Disease Mortality After Liver Transplantation for Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Cirrhosis
ConclusionNASH recipients have an increased risk of CVD mortality after liver transplantation explained by a high prevalence of co‐morbid cardiometabolic risk factors that in aggregate identify those at highest risk of post‐transplant CVD mortality. This article is protected by copyright. Onset of Thrombin Generation Occurs More Rapidly in Pediatric Patients With Celiac Disease
Objective: Celiac disease (CD) is a risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE) and stroke, but the mechanisms are unclear. Continuous measurement of thrombin generation in plasma is a feasible way to detect hypercoagulable changes. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate thrombin generation in pediatric patients with CD compared with pediatric controls. Methods: Plasma samples were collected from 19 pediatric patients with CD and 20 healthy controls. In each patient diagnosed as having CD, thrombin generation was determined twice by means of calibrated automated thrombography. The first measurement was undertaken ...

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Mean Platelet Volume: A Systemic Review and Meta-analysis
Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Increased mean platelet volume (MPV), a marker of platelet activity, is associated with acute myocardial infarction, stroke, thrombosis, and increased mortality after myocardial infarction. The purpose of this study was to perform a meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between NAFLD and MPV. Methodology: A systematic search of MEDLINE (Ovid), PubMed, and CINAHL databases from 1950 to May 2014, complemented with manual review of references of published articles for studies comparing MPV in pati...

Gastrointestinal bleeding in patients on novel oral anticoagulants: Risk, prevention and management.
Abstract Novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs), which include direct thrombin inhibitor (dabigatran) and direct factor Xa inhibitors (rivaroxaban, apixaban and edoxaban), are gaining popularity in the prevention of embolic stroke in non-valvular atrial fibrillation as well as in the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism. However, similar to traditional anticoagulants, NOACs have the side effects of bleeding, including gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB). Results from both randomized clinical trials and observations studies suggest that high-dose dabigatran (150 mg b.i.d), rivaroxaban and high-dose edoxaban (6...

Risk of Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Patients Taking Non-vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are convenient and effective in prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism and prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. However, these drugs have been associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the risk of GI bleeding in patients receiving these drugs.
