Postoperative rescue closure of patent foramen ovale in the clinical setting of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and stroke following coronary artery bypass surgery.
We describe a case of intraoperative diagnosis and successful deferred percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the clinical setting of acute refractory hypoxemic respiratory failure and new-onset ischemic stroke in an elderly patient after coronary artery bypass graft. Perioperative morbidity (i.e. severe hypoxemia, worsening right ventricular dysfunction, and embolic stroke) that is potentially related to intraoperatively diagnosed PFO during cardiac surgery can complicate management in the Intensive Care Unit and perhaps affect the patient's outcome. A Case-Based Discussion on the Management of Cryptogenic Stroke and Patent Foramen Ovale in the Patient With a Hypercoagulable Disorder
UP TO 40% of all ischemic strokes are considered cryptogenic, implying a stroke without a definitive etiology.1,2 With a dearth of evidence-guided treatment strategies, the literature surrounding cryptogenic stroke is highly variable and not well-standardized. Even though existing guidelines do not specify the exact testing required, the cryptogenic stroke evaluation includes a variety of imaging modalities (eg, echocardiography, angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, carotid ultrasound) and laboratory investigations (eg, genetic testing, hypercoagulable disorder panels, erythrocyte sedimentation rate).

Stroke During Hip Surgery.
Authors: Auer J, Primus C Abstract During hip replacement, acetabular and femur bone preparation may cause bone marrow extravasation. Paradoxical fat embolism occurs when emboli pass from the pulmonary to the systemic circulation by either a patent foramen ovale or pulmonary capillaries. Impaired consciousness in the immediate postoperative period of orthopedic surgery frequently results from hypovolemia, anemia, or residual anesthesia. Carotid Artery Free-Floating Thrombus Caused by Paradoxical Embolization From Greater Saphenous Vein Ascending Thrombophlebitis
We report a case of a young woman without cardiovascular risk factors who was admitted to our emergency department with listlessness and altered mental status. The clinical examination revealed right lower limb swelling. Patent foramen ovale closure in children without cardiopathy: Child-PFO study.

Follow-up to ‘Cholecystectomy in the presence of a large patent foramen ovale: laparoscopic or open?’

Impact of Percutaneous Closure of Interatrial Shunts on Migraine Attacks: Single-Operator Series and Review of the Literature.
CONCLUSION: A high percentage (49%) of PFO/ASD patients in this series were also migraine sufferers. Percutaneous closure offered migraine relief in 83% of patients, 82% in PFO patients and 89% in ASD patients. Intracardiac echocardiography for percutaneous patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect occlusion.
CONCLUSION: ICE is a safe and high-quality imaging technique for guiding transcatheter ASD and PFO occlusion. Additionally, ICE can both facilitate device implantation and detect cardiac abnormalities that are not identified with TEE during the initial diagnostic investigation.
