Long-Term Effectiveness of Cilostazol in Patients with Hemodialysis with Peripheral Artery Disease
CONCLUSION: Continuous treatment of cilostazol in patients with HD with PAD significantly decreases the risk of ED visits, hemorrhagic stroke, and cardiovascular events and improves ED visit-free and cardiovascular event-free rates during long-term follow-up.PMID:36216573 | DOI:10.5551/jat.63404

Atrial fibrillation and associated outcomes in patients with peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis: a 14-year nationwide population-based study.
CONCLUSION: In patients with ESRD undergoing dialysis, PD had lowered risks of new onset of AF compared to HD. Subsequently, these AF patients in PD group had comparable incidence of ischemic stroke but decreased incidence of hemorrhagic stroke compared to AF patients in HD group. PD could be the most suitable modality in patients at risk for the onset of AF. PMID: 32086785 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of incident atrial fibrillation after a prior critical illness: A retrospective cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study explored incident AF among patients with critical illness in their medical history. Patients with septicemia/septic shock were at the highest risk of developing new-onset AF among these critically ill patients. PMID: 30243509 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparing the Effectiveness and Safety of Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants and Warfarin in the Elderly Asian Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to warfarin, NOACs were associated with a significantly lower risk of adverse events, with heterogeneity in treatment effects among different age strata. Overall, the clear safety signal in favor of NOACs over warfarin was evident irrespective of age strata, being most marked in the most elderly. PMID: 31809694 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical burden of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
Abstract There are no specific therapies for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), and clinical data evaluating the effects of non-specific therapies on ADPKD patients are scarce. We therefore evaluated those effects using data from a longitudinal health insurance database collected from 2000-2010. We individually selected patients with and without ADPKD from inpatient data files as well as from the catastrophic illness registry in Taiwan based on 1:5 frequency matching for sex, age, and index year. The hazard ratios (HR) of all-cause mortality, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke and end-stage ren...

Mortality of cardiovascular events in COPD patients with preceding hospitalized acute exacerbation.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Acute exacerbation (AE) of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may be accompanied by the deterioration of cardiovascular comorbidities, as evidenced by the increased incidence of acute cardiovascular events. RESEARCH QUESTION: Whether preceding AE might be associated with mortality of cardiovascular events remains unknown. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a health insurance research database in Taiwan, we identified patients with COPD who experienced first-time acute myocardial infarction (AMI; n=26,442), ischemic stroke (n=54,959) and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH; n=14,893) ...

Gender differences in major adverse cardiovascular outcomes among aged over 60 year-old patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease: A population-based longitudinal study in Taiwan
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) including cerebrovascular disease (CVD), coronary artery disease (CAD), and peripheral arterial disease (PAD), contributes to the major causes of death in the world. Although several studies have evaluated the association between gender and major adverse cardiovascular outcomes in old ASCVD patients, the result is not consistent. Hence, we need a large-scale study to address this issue. This retrospective cohort study included aged over 60 year-old patients with a diagnosis of ASCVD, including CVD, CAD, or PAD, from the database contained in the Taiwan National Health Insuran...
