Risk of stroke in first-ever acute urinary retention: A 10-year population-based study
Conclusion There was significant difference in the risk of stroke between patients with and without AUR. Preventive measures should be taken for patients with AUR, which may be associated with an increased risk of subsequent stroke. Large-scale population-based studies in other countries and regions are recommended.

Identification of reversible causes of minority inequity in stroke: severity related to race and socio-economic status.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients who are uninsured minorities may be at an increased risk for severe strokes. This increase in risk appears to be related to the increased incidence of risk factors and lack of treatment. The lack of funds, care access, and limited education in these patients may be related to their increase in risk factors. This paper identifies potentially reversible environmental and societal factors that can lead to improved outcomes in indigent minority patients. PMID: 30325276 [PubMed - in process]

Body mass index and stroke risk among patients with diabetes mellitus in Korea
ConclusionBMI was positively associated with the overall risk of stroke among DM patients in Korea. The risk of ischemic stroke was higher in obese patients compared to overweight or normal-weight patients. However, the risk of hemorrhagic stroke was higher in slimmer patients compared with overweight or obese patients.

Impact of early statin therapy in patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack
ConclusionsIn acute ischemic stroke, patients receiving late statin treatment carried a poorer clinical outcome than those with earlier statin initiation. Inhospital statin use after an acute ischemic stroke did not increase the risk of cerebral hemorrhage.

CARES (Changing and Advancing Risk factor control through Educations after Stroke): A Pilot Trial of a Transitions in Care Post-discharge Telephone Intervention for Stroke Patients (S13.006)
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of study is to test the feasibility and effectiveness of a telephonic post-discharge intervention designed to improve access to care, reinforce self-management skills, improve health literacy, and screen for complications in a government-run safety net system. BACKGROUND: In the United States, risk factor control after stroke is poor, particularly among socio-economically disadvantaged populations with poor access to care. The immediate post-discharge period is a vulnerable time for stroke patients, given their risk of recurrent stroke, worsening symptoms, complications, and need for medication titra...

Sitagliptin After Ischemic Stroke in Type 2 Diabetic Patients: A Nationwide Cohort Study
Abstract: The cerebrovascular safety and efficacy of sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with ischemic stroke remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of sitagliptin in patients with T2DM with recent ischemic stroke. We analyzed data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between March 1, 2009, and December 31, 2011. Ischemic stroke patients were identified from individuals with T2DM. Patients who received sitagliptin were compared with those who did not to evaluate the cardiovascular safety and efficacy...

Care pathways and healthcare use of stroke survivors six months after admission to an acute-care hospital in France in 2012.
CONCLUSIONS: These results illustrate the value of administrative databases to study stroke management, care pathways and ambulatory care. These data should be used to improve care pathways, organization, discharge planning and treatments. PMID: 27038535 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Hospital Discharge Disposition of Stroke Patients in Tennessee.
CONCLUSIONS: Our investigation revealed that the hospital discharge disposition pattern of patients with stroke in Tennessee was associated with the key patient characteristics of selected demographics, clinical indicators, and insurance status. These analyses resulted in the development of an easy-to-use predictive tool for early determination of hospital discharge disposition status. PMID: 28863224 [PubMed - in process]

Impact of heart failure on stroke mortality and recurrence
Conclusions HF increases the risk of mortality in both AIS and ICH. We are the first to report on high-risk periods of stroke recurrence in patients with HF with ICH. Specific targeted risk reduction strategies may have significant clinical impact for mortality and recurrence in stroke.
