Seventeen-year time trend in poor self-rated health in older adults: changing contributions of chronic diseases and disability
Conclusion: Our results suggest that the seeming stability of poor SRH hides underlying increases in chronic diseases and disability: over time, people may attach importance to different aspects of health when rating their overall health.

Pharmacotherapy of obesity: clinical treatments and considerations.
Abstract Obesity is a world-wide epidemic associated with significant morbidity and mortality which costs billions of dollars per year. The associated related conditions are many and include heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea and certain types of cancer. Given that it is a multifactorial problem, the treatments must also address the numerous causes associated with the development of obesity. The neurohormonal regulation of feeding and energy is a complex system often necessitating modification through more than 1 pathway to achieve weight loss. Therefore, in addition to lifestyle changes...

Sleep and mortality: cause, consequence, or symptom?
Epidemiologic studies of self-reported sleep and health status began to appear more than 40years ago. However, in the last 15years there has been an explosion of population science on the relationships between sleep quantity and quality as well as a variety of health outcomes, and the implications for public health have become apparent . There is sufficient evidence to support the idea that disturbances of quantity and quality of sleep, however and wherever measured, are associated with increased likelihood of developing conditions, including neurobehavioral difficulties, obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary ...

Analysis of the structure of calpain-10 and its interaction with the protease inhibitor SNJ-1715
Abstract: Calpain-10 (CAPN10) is a cysteine protease that is activated by intracellular calcium (Ca2+) and known to be involved in diseases such as cancer, heart attack, and stroke. A role for the CAPN10 gene in diabetes mellitus type II was recently identified. Hyper activation of the enzyme initiates a series of destructive cycles that can cause irreversible damage to cells. The development of inhibitors may be useful as therapeutic agents for a number of calpainopathies. In this paper, we have used the homology modelling technique to determine the 3D structure of calpain-10 from Homo sapiens. The model of calpain-10 obt...

A nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study: increased risk of acute coronary syndrome in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
Conclusions: AS patients are at higher risk of ACS compared with non-AS subjects. Management of CV risk factors should be taken into account for the treatment of patients with AS, especially for patients with co-morbidities of hypertension, DM, and cancer. Long-term alcohol consumption is an independent risk factor of hypertension development in northern China: evidence from Kailuan study
Objective:The purpose of the present study was to determine the impact of alcohol consumption on the incidence of hypertension. Methods:A total of 32 389 male coal mine workers from Kailuan Coal Group in northern China (Kailuan study), free of hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke, transient ischemia attack and cancer, were followed up every 2 years for 4 years. The average alcohol intake during the past year was reported as baseline. Results:During 4 years of follow-up, 9151 out of 32 389 workers developed hypertension categorically. The association between self-reported history of physical diseases and psychological distress in a community-dwelling Japanese population: the Ohsaki Cohort 2006 Study
Conclusions: Subjects with a history of physical disease were significantly and positively associated with psychological distress, and social support did not modify this association for most physical diseases. Even after patients have left hospital following treatment for physical disease, they require continuous monitoring for psychological distress by doctors and paramedics.
