Effects of acupuncture or similar needling therapy on pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function in individuals with chronic ankle instability: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence suggests that acupuncture or similar needling therapy may improve pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function in individuals with CAI, but more trials are needed to verify these findings. Furthermore, various needles and techniques using in different studies have resulted in methodologic limitations that should be addressed in the future.PMID:37666474 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctim.2023.102983

Experiences of decisional conflict related to epidural labour analgesia among women during late pregnancy in a tertiary hospital in China: a mixed methods study
CONCLUSION: Decisional conflict related to epidural labour analgesia is a noteworthy issue amongst women during their late pregnancy. This study suggests a need for provision of family-centred shared decision-making practice about the use of epidural analgesia in labour.PMID:37666059 | DOI:10.1016/j.midw.2023.103798

Pain management in adult patients with sickle cell disease in the emergency department: how does current practice compare with existing standards of care?
CONCLUSION: Existing recommendations are that opioid analgesia be provided within 30 min of triage for patients with SCD and VOEs. Our data show this target is rarely met, even in a department in which SCD VOEs are a common presenting concern. The association of earlier opioid analgesia with order set use and administration prior to physician assessment highlights potential avenues for improving time to analgesia.PMID:37661245 | DOI:10.1007/s43678-023-00579-y

Anti-nociceptive and Anti-inflammatory Activities of Visnagin in Different Nociceptive and Inflammatory Mice Models
This study intends to explore the potential to treat pain by inhibiting nociception and inflammation with a safer, non-addictive, effective, and low-cost alternative agent from a natural source, visnagin. In vivo studies have been conducted using male Swiss albino mice as models for this research. Nociception was induced using different chemical and thermal stimuli such as acetic acid, glutamate, capsaicin, and formalin. To check for the anti-inflammatory properties, carrageenan was used to induce inflammation and the activity was assayed using peritoneal cavity leukocyte infiltration analysis and pro-inflammatory cytokine...

Prediction of pain using electrocardiographic ‐derived autonomic measures: A systematic review
ConclusionsMost studies demonstrated that parasympathetic activity could predict acute and chronic pain intensity. In the clinic, this may be used to identify which patients need more intensive care to prevent, for example postoperative pain and develop personalized chronic pain management.SignificancePain is a debilitating problem, and the ability to predict occurrence and severity would be a useful clinical tool. Basal autonomic tone has been suggested to influence pain perception. This systematic review investigated electrocardiographic-derived autonomic tone and found that increased parasympathetic tone could predict p...

Clinical phenotypes and quality of life to define post-COVID-19 syndrome: a cluster analysis of the multinational, prospective ORCHESTRA cohort
EClinicalMedicine. 2023 Jul 21;62:102107. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2023.102107. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Lack of specific definitions of clinical characteristics, disease severity, and risk and preventive factors of post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) severely impacts research and discovery of new preventive and therapeutics drugs.METHODS: This prospective multicenter cohort study was conducted from February 2020 to June 2022 in 5 countries, enrolling SARS-CoV-2 out- and in-patients followed at 3-, 6-, and 12-month from diagnosis, with assessment of clinical and biochemical features, antibody (Ab) response, Variant o...

Prevalence Estimates of Arthritis and Activity-Limiting Pain Among Family Caregivers to Older Adults
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Arthritis and activity-limiting bothersome pain are highly prevalent among caregivers. Given increased prevalence of pain among certain caregivers, it may be efficient to target these groups for pain management interventions.PMID:37656675 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnad124

Bilateral subgaleal hematoma after a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy: an uncommon complication
We present a case of a 62-year old male who developed subgaleal hematoma associated with transient neurologic impairment after surgery. Jugular vein insufficiency was suspected as the most likely cause. The patient recovered fully. Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy can be a challenging procedure due to the anesthesia requirements, but most complications are mild and transient. However, patients should be carefully assessed before surgery. We identified potential factors that may have led to this complication: the abnormal prolonged surgical time, the steep Trendelenburg, a non-assessed jugular vein insufficiency, and/or...

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol X. 2023 Aug 14;19:100228. doi: 10.1016/j.eurox.2023.100228. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTThis review provides an overview of patient experiences of endometriosis, endometriosis-related types and sources of stigma pertaining to menstruation, chronic pain, and infertility, and their impact on patients' mental health with particular implications for patient care. Because endometriosis is a complex disease with multifactorial etiology, complicated pathophysiology, and a spectrum of clinical features, diagnosis of endometriosis is typically a lengthy process, and many patients experience initial...
