A Novel Mutation of < em > MSH2 < /em > Gene in a Patient with Lynch Syndrome Presenting with Thirteen Metachronous Malignancies
J Clin Med. 2023 Aug 24;12(17):5502. doi: 10.3390/jcm12175502.ABSTRACTLynch syndrome (LS), also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), accounts for 2-3% of all colorectal cancers. This autosomal dominant disorder is associated with a predisposition to endometrial, stomach, small bowel, pancreatic, biliary tract, ovary, urinary tract, brain, and skin tumors. Lynch syndrome is caused by the mutation of the MLH1, MSH2 (EPCAM), MSH6, and PMS2 genes. In this article, a case study of a 70-year-old female patient with Lynch syndrome is presented. Over a span of 30 years, the patient underwent multiple surgica...

Psilocybin induces acute and persisting alterations in immune status in healthy volunteers: An experimental, placebo-controlled study
Brain Behav Immun. 2023 Sep 7;114:299-310. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2023.09.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients characterized by stress-related disorders such as depression display elevated circulating concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines and a hyperactive HPA axis. Psychedelics are demonstrating promising results in treatment of such disorders, however the mechanisms of their therapeutic effects are still unknown. To date the evidence of acute and persisting effects of psychedelics on immune functioning, HPA axis activity in response to stress, and associated psychological outcomes is preliminary. To address thi...

Differentiation of lung and breast cancer brain metastases: Comparison of texture analysis and deep convolutional neural networks
CONCLUSION: CNNs achieved superior diagnostic performance in differentiating brain metastases from lung and breast malignancies than texture-based image features. Differentiation using 3D volumes as input exhibited a higher success rate than 2D sagittal images.PMID:37688435 | DOI:10.1002/jcu.23558

Machine-Learning-Aided Prediction of Brain Metastases Development in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancers
CONCLUSION: Analysis of the importance of input features suggests that the models are learning the relevant relationships between clinical features/development of BM. A higher number of samples is to be prioritized to improve performance. Employed prospectively at initial diagnosis, such models can help select high-risk subgroups for surveillance brain MRI.PMID:37689579 | DOI:10.1016/j.cllc.2023.08.002

Advancements and emerging trends in brain tumor classification using MRI: a systematic review
AbstractBrain tumor (BT) classification plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of BTs using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans. This systematic review aims to analyze and summarize the existing literature on BT classification using MRI, focusing on the advancements, techniques, and trends in this field. A comprehensive search strategy was employed to identify relevant articles published between 2020 and 2023. The selected articles were analyzed based on their pre-processing techniques, feature extraction methods, segmentation approaches, and classification algorithms. The review highlights the strengths an...

Clinicopathologic study of stage I adenosquamous carcinoma of the lung
CONCLUSIONS: Early-stage adenosquamous carcinoma of the lung is a histological type associated with severe prognosis and postoperative recurrence, often in distant sites, in approximately one-third of cases. High serum carcinoembryonic antigen levels and vascular invasion might be risk factors of recurrence.PMID:37681230 | DOI:10.1093/jjco/hyad122

Iron oxide nanoparticles induce ferroptosis via the autophagic pathway by synergistic bundling with paclitaxel
Mol Med Rep. 2023 Oct;28(4):198. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2023.13085. Epub 2023 Sep 8.ABSTRACTIn recent years, inhibiting tumor cell activity by triggering cell ferroptosis has become a research hotspot. The development of generic targeted nanotherapeutics might bring new ideas for non‑invasive applications. Currently, the potential mechanism underlying the universal application of paclitaxel (PTX)‑loaded iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP@PTX) to different types of tumors is unclear. The present study aimed to prepare IONP@PTX for targeted cancer therapy and further explore the potential mechanisms underlying the inhibitory effec...

Updated Austrian treatment algorithm for metastatic triple-negative breast cancer
Wien Klin Wochenschr. 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.1007/s00508-023-02254-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTApproximately 15% of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients have neither hormone receptors expression nor HER2 overexpression and/or HER2/neu gene amplification. This subtype of breast cancer is known as Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), and carries a significantly elevated risk of local and distant recurrence. In comparison with other breast cancer subtypes, there is a higher rate of visceral and brain metastases. The majority of metastases of TNBC are diagnosed within three years after initial breast cancer diagnosis. Whi...
