Utility of growth differentiation factor-15 as a predictor of cardiovascular surgery outcomes: Current research and future directions
This study acknowledges that the relationship between patient outcomes and elevated GDF-15 levels is not limited to CVDs or cardiac surgery but can be associated with variable diseases, including diabetes and cancer. Moreover, the normal range of GDF-15 is not well defined. Given its promise for improving patient care and outcomes in cardiovascular surgery, future research should explore the potential of GDF-15 as a biomarker for postoperative outcomes and target therapeutic intervention.PMID:37648079 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.08.013

Proteomic and metabolomic analyses illustrate the mechanisms of expression of the O < sup > 6 < /sup > -methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase gene in glioblastoma
CONCLUSION: This study provides novel mechanisms to understand methylation in GBM and identifies some biomarkers for the prognosis of two different GBM types, MGMT promoter unmethylated or methylated GBM, by using metabolomics and proteomics analyses.PMID:37641495 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14415

Microbial production of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): biosynthetic pathways, physical parameter optimization, and health benefits
Arch Microbiol. 2023 Aug 29;205(9):321. doi: 10.1007/s00203-023-03666-x.ABSTRACTOmega-3 fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and α-linolenic acid (ALA), are essential polyunsaturated fatty acids with diverse health benefits. The limited conversion of dietary DHA necessitates its consumption as food supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids possess anti-arrhythmic and anti-inflammatory capabilities, contributing to cardiovascular health. Additionally, DHA consumption is linked to improved vision, brain, and memory development. Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids offer protection against vario...

Elimination of senescent cells by treatment with Navitoclax/ABT263 reverses whole brain irradiation-induced blood-brain barrier disruption in the mouse brain
In this study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that WBI induces endothelial senescence, contributing to chronic disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and microvascular rarefaction. To accomplish this, we utilized transgenic p16-3MR mice, which enable the identification and selective elimination of senescent cells. These mice were subjected to a clinically relevant fractionated WBI protocol (5 Gy twice weekly for 4 weeks), and cranial windows were applied to both WBI-treated and control mice. Quantitative assessment of BBB permeability and capillary density was performed using two-photon microscopy at the 6-month post...

Targeting EZH2 regulates the biological characteristics of glioma stem cells via the Notch1 pathway
Exp Brain Res. 2023 Aug 29. doi: 10.1007/s00221-023-06693-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlioma is the most common malignant brain tumor, and its behavior is closely related to the presence of glioma stem cells (GSCs). We found that the enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) is highly expressed in glioma and that its expression is correlated with the prognosis of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) in two databases: The Cancer Genome Atlas and the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas. Additionally, EZH2 is known to regulate the stemness-associated gene expression, proliferation, and invasion ability of GSCs, which may be achieved through t...

Head-to-head comparison of < sup > 68 < /sup > GaGa-DOTA.SA.FAPi with < sup > 18 < /sup > FF-FDG PET/CT in radioiodine-resistant follicular-cell derived thyroid cancers
CONCLUSION: The study results demonstrate the superior performance of [68Ga]Ga-DOTA.SA.FAPi compared to [18F]F-FDG PET/CT in detecting lymph nodal, liver, bowel, and brain metastases in patients with RAI-R-FCTC. These findings highlight the potential of [68Ga]Ga-DOTA.SA.FAPi as a theranostic tool that can complement the benefits of [18F]F-FDG PET/CT in the imaging of RAI-R-FCTC.PMID:37642703 | DOI:10.1007/s00259-023-06404-z
