Assessing the effectiveness of zoster vaccine live: A retrospective cohort study using primary care data in the United Kingdom.
CONCLUSIONS: ZVL reduced the risk of shingles among an elderly population. Given the negative impact of shingles and PHN on QoL, the benefits of vaccination are clear. Improving uptake in the UK is needed in this population. PMID: 30195489 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Herpes Zoster.
This article summarizes the background, evidence, and guidelines for the diagnosis, complications, treatment, and prevention of herpes zoster. Diagnosis of challenging cases relies on polymerase chain reaction as the preferred test. Treatment focuses on optimal use of antiviral therapy and analgesics. Prevention emphasizes utilization of a new recombinant zoster vaccine, which reduces the incidence of herpes zoster by more than 90% and is preferred to the live attenuated herpes zoster vaccine. Measuring herpes zoster disease burden in São Paulo, Brazil: a clinico-epidemiological single-center study
CONCLUSIONS: Herpes zoster is associated with a significant disease burden, including zoster-associated pain, impaired quality of life and increased healthcare resource utilization in Brazil. These results support the implementation of early intervention and prevention programs such as vaccinations to reduce the herpes zoster-associated disease burden in Brazil.

Cost-effectiveness of the Adjuvanted Herpes Zoster Subunit Vaccine
To the Editor Le and Rothberg recently assessed the cost-effectiveness of the adjuvanted herpes zoster subunit vaccine in a population of older adults, finding that it was cost-effective at the commonly accepted willingness-to-pay threshold of $50  000 per quality-adjusted life-year. In their analyses, the authors accounted for not only the costs of the vaccine and the benefits associated with the prevention of herpes zoster but also the costs and decreased quality of life associated with adverse effects. In an accompanying editorial, Najaf zadeh discussed the evolution and value of the herpes zoster vaccine. However, in...

Herpes zoster in frail elderly patients: prevalence, impact, management, and preventive strategies.
Abstract Population aging is a worldwide phenomenon with significant and manifold impacts on society. Advanced age correlates with the onset of frailty. In this vulnerable state, the immune response is weakened and a higher susceptibility to infectious diseases is observed. The present narrative review aims to cover the topic of herpes zoster (HZ) and its complications in frail populations. The lifetime risk of developing HZ is estimated at about 20-30%, and the risk increases with age. In older people, HZ can lead to the inability to recover the lifestyle, the interests, and the level of activity that existed bef...

Willingness to pay, quality of life, and knowledge on herpes zoster among thai patients prior zoster vaccine era.
This study was designed to assess willingness to pay, quality of life, and the patients’ knowledge on herpes zoster disease. All of the patients were asked to complete questionnaires about the willingness to pay for zoster treatment using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) questionnaires in Thai version and basic knowledge about herpes zoster. The demographic and clinical data were all recorded. Eighty-two from one hundred and eighteen patients in this study were female (69.5%), and the mean (SD) age was 57.6 (14.9) years. The median of their willingness to pay for zoster treatment was THB500 (range of THB50-10,00...

Postherpetic Neuralgia and Trigeminal Neuralgia.
Authors: Feller L, Khammissa RAG, Fourie J, Bouckaert M, Lemmer J Abstract Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is an unpredictable complication of varicella zoster virus- (VZV-) induced herpes zoster (HZ) which often occurs in elderly and immunocompromised persons and which can induce psychosocial dysfunction and can negatively impact on quality of life. Preventive options for PHN include vaccination of high-risk persons against HZ, early use of antiviral agents, and robust management of pain during the early stage of acute herpes zoster. If it does occur, PHN may persist for months or even years after resolution of the H...

The disease often causes severe pain that may last for a few weeks, with substantial influence on individuals ’ quality of life, daily activities, and work. Some patients continue to experience debilitating pain for more than a year, a complication that is known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Serious cases can involve the eyes and central nervous system disease.

Herpes zoster at the vaccination site in immunized healthy children
Abstract In this case series, we report seven immunized healthy children without underlying immunodeficiency who presented with herpes zoster that correlated with varicella‐zoster vaccination site. The morphology of the lesions included erythematous papules, pseudovesicles, and plaques, with associated pain in two and pruritus in three patients; systemic symptoms ranged from none to low‐grade fevers, upper respiratory symptoms, and joint pain. These cases highlight the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic implications of herpes zoster in vaccinated children.
