Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1933: Unraveling the Dynamics of Omicron (BA.1, BA.2, and BA.5) Waves and Emergence of the Deltacton Variant: Genomic Epidemiology of the SARS-CoV-2 Epidemic in Cyprus (Oct 2021 & ndash;Oct 2022)
This study offers a comprehensive assessment spanning genetic, phylogenetic, phylodynamic, and phylogeographic dimensions, focused on the trajectory of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Cyprus. Based on a dataset comprising 4700 viral genomic sequences obtained from affected individuals between October 2021 and October 2022, our analysis is presented. Over this timeframe, a total of 167 distinct lineages and sublineages emerged, including variants such as Delta and Omicron (1, 2, and 5). Notably, during the fifth wave of infections, Omicron subvariants 1 and 2 gained prominence, followed by the ascendancy of Omicron 5 in the subs...

Real-time surveillance of international SARS-CoV-2 prevalence using systematic traveller arrival screening: An observational study
ConclusionsAs well as elucidating previously unmeasured infection dynamics in these countries, our analysis provides a proof-of-concept for scalable and accurate leading indicator of global infections during future pandemics.

Parental acceptability of vaccinating young children against influenza and COVID-19
CONCLUSION: About 40 % of the parents were supportive of children's vaccinations against COVID-19 and influenza respectively (37 % and 42 %) in order to protect the vulnerable people around them. The media influences the decision to vaccinate especially when the level of education is low.PMID:37580209 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.005

Mortality-related risk factors of inpatients with diabetes and COVID-19: a multicenter retrospective study in Belgium
CONCLUSION: In-hospital mortality due to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Belgium was high in patients with diabetes. We found that advanced age and male gender were independent risk factors for in-hospital death. We also showed that metformin use before admission was associated with significantly lower COVID-19-related in-hospital mortality. Finally, we showed that CKD is a COVID-19-related mortality risk factor in patients with diabetes admitted to the ICU.PMID:37574109 | DOI:10.1016/j.ando.2023.08.002

Epidemiological features of ophthalmic emergencies during the COVID-19 lockdown: Impact of the health crisis in a tertiary care center
CONCLUSION: A significant reduction in total ophthalmic presentations in the emergency eye care unit was observed during the lockdown period. However, the proportion of emergencies requiring specialized treatments (surgical, infectious, inflammatory and neuro-ophthalmological pathologies) increased.PMID:37429806 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfo.2023.05.002
