COVID-19 and IgA Vasculitis
J Rheumatol. 2022 Dec 15:jrheum.221074. doi: 10.3899/jrheum.221074. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe would like to discuss the article recently published in The Journal of Rheumatology, entitled "Immunoglobulin A Vasculitis Following COVID-19: A French Multicenter Case Series" by Ramdani et al.1 This case series of individuals who developed IgA vasculitis (IgAV) after contracting SARS-CoV-2 describes the formation of IgAV shortly after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection; however, it was unable to completely rule out a coincidental connection between these 2 events.1.PMID:36521918 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.221074

The Case for Cautious COVID Optimism This Winter
At this time last year and two years ago, daily new infections and covid-related hospitalizations were already accelerating at a fast clip. BQ.1 and BQ.1.1, the latest Omicron subvariants, came to comprise the majority of cases during a relative lull in the pandemic. Combined with a Thanksgiving Holiday that saw the most travelers since the pandemic started, there has been a steady increase in covid metrics. However, there are many reasons to be optimistic. A combination of factors—a high level of population immunity, Omicron family antigenic drift, convergence of mutations that seem to have hit an evolutionary ceili...

Race to control ‘tripledemic’ as cases of RSV in children sweep US and Europe
Spike in respiratory syncytial virus as well as Covid and flu pushing many hospitals close to brinkBefore Covid, few people had heard of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Increasingly, though, this common cause of pneumonia and bronchiolitis (airway inflammation) is filling up hospital beds across Europe and the Americas. Combined with rising admissions for other respiratory infections, including influenza and Covid, it is pushing some healthcare systems close to the brink of collapse. In its latest report, theEuropean Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said a number of countries had been experiencing unusual...

The successful use of Pezzer Catheter in Covid-19 patients
Conclusions: 1. It is well known that the most basic issue that may have an impact on airleaks is chest tube management. That is the reason we concentrated on the type and position of chest drain. 2. Our experience supports the use of Pezzer catheter connected to water seal in cases of persistent pneumothorax with prolonged air leak and increasing subcutaneous emphysema, since it promotes pleurodesis, reduces significantly the duration of the intrapleural drainages and the length of the in-hospital stay. 3. The procedure is cost-effective, safe, and easy to perform

Integration of mental health support teams in COVID-19 units within French general hospitals: a qualitative study
Conclusion:Person- and family-centered approach of integrated care (IC) is essential to address fragmentation between mental and physical health care in times of epidemic crisis. Hospital and political leaders should support and draw from bottom-up mental health IC initiatives such as MHSTs, that embody this vision, in order to improve health systems preparedness for future crises. R ésuméIntroduction: Cette étude a visé à explorer l’expérience de professionnels de santé mentale (mhPs) redéployés sur des équipes de soutien (MHSTs) implantées à l’hôpital général pour les patients atteints par la maladie ...

COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and its socio-demographic and emotional determinants: A multi-country cross-sectional study
In this study, we explore determinants of COVID-19 vaccination intent across17 countries worldwide.METHODS: In this large-scale multi-country study, we explored intent to accept a COVID-19 vaccine and the socio-demographic and emotional determinants of uptake for 17 countries and over 19,000 individuals surveyed in June and July 2020 via nationally representative samples. We used Bayesian ordinal logistic regressions to probe the relationship between intent to accept a COVID-19 vaccine and individuals' socio-demographic status, their confidence in COVID-19 vaccines, and their recent emotional status. Gibbs sampling was use...

Machine learning-based scoring system to predict in-hospital outcomes in patients hospitalized with COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: The CCF risk score was built using data collected routinely at hospital admission to predict outcomes in patients with COVID-19. This score holds promise to improve early triage of patients and allocation of healthcare resources.PMID:36376208 | DOI:10.1016/j.acvd.2022.08.003

Safety profile of the lopinavir/ritonavir combination before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: This different safety profile may be related to the effect of the virus on the organs, the patient profile (age, medical history…) and the drugs associated with lopinavir/ritonavir. Our study should serve as a reminder that the safety profile of a drug can depend on its use. Spontaneous reporting and pharmacovigilance have a critical role in alerting health professionals to "new" ADRs reported with well-known drugs.PMID:36376122 | DOI:10.1016/j.therap.2022.10.066
