Academic socialization as the production and negotiation of social space
This article introduces the concept of academic social space as a useful construct to understand and interpret the academic language socialization of individuals in English second language academic spaces. Academic social space builds on the concepts of community of practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and production of space (Lefebvre, 1991). The article then reports on a study that adopted the notion of academic social space to examine the language socialization of one international student in a tertiary institute in New Zealand. Data about this case from various sources including diaries, interviews, class observations, field...

The future of medical congresses
Remember when pharma invested an enormous amount of time, effort and money into attending medical congresses around the world?    In the pandemic-blighted present, where all such global physical events have been put on hold, it seems an age away.    Many organisations – Reuters Events Pharma and ASCO to name but two - took immediate action and successfully transitioned their events to a digital format in record time; others were more risk-averse and chose to postpone events pending more certainty.  So whither medical congresses now? Christoph Schmidt, former global head of commercial excellence at Actelion Pharm...

The Cambridge Structural Database in chemical education: analysis of hydrogen-bonded networks in salts of hexaaqua metal ions with organic counter-ions
This paper describes a laboratory course that introduces basic crystallographic data analysis to chemistry students encountering for the first time the world of crystals and crystal structures. The aim of the course is to provide students with direct contact with crystal structures and hands-on experience in structure analysis. To this end, a set of appropriately simple inorganic molecular structures was selected, consisting of salts of hexaaqua metal ions with organic counter-ions. By exploiting the crystallographic tools available in the Cambridge Structural Database program Mercury, students learn how to visualize and a...

Fluorosurfactants for medical nanoemulsions, their surface-active and biological properties
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2021 Feb 4;200:111603. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2021.111603. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNano- and microemulsions have found various applications in pharmaceutical and medical areas both in research field as well as in applied solutions for drug delivery or diagnostic agents. However, production of stable and bio- / hemocompatible nanoemulsions are still challenging. New group of ionic surfactants have been synthesized with perfluorohexyl- or perfluorooctyl-groups as hydrophobic tail. The CMC and the parametres of the O/W emulsion (the particle size distribution and the zeta-potential) were ...

Development of a Certification Exam to Assess Undergraduate Students' Proficiency in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Core Concepts
CBE Life Sci Educ. 2021 Jun;20(2):es6. doi: 10.1187/cbe.19-12-0265.ABSTRACTWith support from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), a community of biochemistry and molecular biology (BMB) scientist-educators has developed and administered an assessment instrument designed to evaluate student competence across four core concept and skill areas fundamental to BMB. The four areas encompass energy and metabolism; information storage and transfer; macromolecular structure, function, and assembly; and skills including analytical and quantitative reasoning. First offered in 2014, the exam has now bee...
