Development of a Certification Exam to Assess Undergraduate Students' Proficiency in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Core Concepts
CBE Life Sci Educ. 2021 Jun;20(2):es6. doi: 10.1187/cbe.19-12-0265.ABSTRACTWith support from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), a community of biochemistry and molecular biology (BMB) scientist-educators has developed and administered an assessment instrument designed to evaluate student competence across four core concept and skill areas fundamental to BMB. The four areas encompass energy and metabolism; information storage and transfer; macromolecular structure, function, and assembly; and skills including analytical and quantitative reasoning. First offered in 2014, the exam has now bee...

Review, analysis, and education of antiseptic related ocular injury in the surgical settings
Ocul Surf. 2021 Jul 2:S1542-0124(21)00067-7. doi: 10.1016/j.jtos.2021.06.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPreoperative skin antiseptic preparation is the gold standard for prevention of surgical infection. However, improper use of antiseptics may lead to severe ocular damage. Currently, the most common surgical antiseptics can be divided into aqueous-based and alcohol-based disinfectants, with chlorhexidine and iodine/iodophors being the two major components. Chlorhexidine has a persistent antimicrobial effect and is resistant to neutralization by blood or organic products in surgical wounds. Nevertheless, due to its tox...

Prevalence and Clinical Characteristics of Fabry Disease in Chinese Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
CONCLUSIONS: FD is not uncommon in Chinese patients with HCM. Multiple organic involvement, dual ventricular hypertrophy, and conduction disease provide clinical clues for suspected FD, and early genetic screening is necessary. Surgical septal myectomy and migalastat improve the long-term prognosis of patients with FD.PMID:34266644 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2021.01.009
