Discussion Hydrocarbons (HC) are organic compounds that are abused because they produce a euphoric effect, usually quickly, are low cost and easily obtained. They are commonly abused by adolescents and use in the US is either stable or increasing. Volatile HC rapidly distribute throughout the body which produces euphoria in seconds to minutes. There are 3 ways that HC are inhaled: Sniffing – directly inhaling the HC from the container. This has the lowest HC concentration. Getting Rigor Right.
Abstract A colleague of mine once shared a story he heard of an organic chemistry teacher who would tell people he had one of the most important, lifesaving jobs in the world. Why? Because he made sure academically unprepared premed students never made it to medical school. Teachers can have many possible motivations for maintaining high academic standards in their courses. A desire to ensure future health practitioners are adequately prepared to engage in the intellectual rigor of their profession may be just one of them. PMID: 32577040 [PubMed - in process]

Pyrolysis: An effective technique for degradation of COVID-19 medical wastes
This study focuses on thermochemical process, particularly pyrolysis process to treat the medical waste. Pyrolysis is a process that utilizes the thermal instability of organic components in medical waste to convert them into valuable products. Besides, the technique is environmentally friendly, more efficient and cost-effective, requires less landfill capacity, and causes lower pollution. The current pandemic situation generates a large amount of plastic medical wastes, which mainly consists of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, and nylon. These plastic wastes can be converted into valua...

Determining Medical Urgency of Voice Disorders Using Auditory-Perceptual Voice Assessments Performed by Speech-Language Pathologists
CONCLUSIONS: SLPs identified 86% of medically urgent voice disorders when auditory perceptual assessments were combined with medical history information. Further work is needed to determine what medical history information is most crucial to rating accuracy and what speech tasks might best separate urgent and nonurgent patients.PMID:34282649 | DOI:10.1177/00034894211032779
