Genotype 4 hepatitis C virus-a review of a diverse genotype
CONCLUSIONS: The availability of safe and effective therapy has created a real opportunity for HCV eradication in line with the goal set by the World Health Organization. An example of a country where this is happening is Egypt, where GT4 accounts for more than 90% of HCV infections. There, broad access to therapy has been effectively supported by population-based screening.PMID:36640687 | DOI:10.1016/j.advms.2022.12.003

The susceptibility of anti-tuberculosis drug-induced liver injury and chronic hepatitis C infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion This meta-analysis suggests that CHC infection may increase the risk of ATDILI. Regular liver tests are mandatory for CHC carriers under anti-TB therapy.

Late diagnosis of hepatitis C virus infection, 2014-2016: continuing missed intervention opportunities.
CONCLUSIONS: More than one-fifth of patients with newly diagnosed HCV infection during 2014-2016-and more than a quarter of those born between 1945 and 1965-had late diagnosis despite many years of in-system care, an increase of 5 percentage points since 2006-2011, after the interim initiation of age-based screening recommendations. Our data highlight missed opportunities for diagnosis and therapeutic intervention before the onset of severe liver disease, which is associated with high cost and diminished outcomes. Hepatitis C virus infection in the Maghreb region
ABSTRACT Hepatitis C is a global health problem with a worldwide prevalence of about 3% (around 170 million people). Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is major concern in the Maghreb countries, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia, but no detailed description of its epidemiology in the region is available. In the present review, a systematic search was undertaken covering HCV data available in peer‐reviewed databases as well as institutional reports and regional conference meeting abstracts from the Maghreb countries. Reports written in English and French were included in this analysis. Estimates of national and region...

Does knowledge about bloodborne pathogens influence the reuse of medical injection syringes among women in Pakistan?
Summary: Injections with re-used syringes have been identified as a major risk factor for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in Pakistan. We analyzed data from the 2006–2007 Pakistan Demographic Health Survey (PDHS) to describe the distribution of injections administered with newly opened syringes and assessed the association of knowledge about bloodborne pathogens with syringe reuse in Pakistan. In the PDHS, women aged 12–49 years were enrolled through a multistage stratified cluster-sampling strategy across Pakistan. Approximately 10,000 women were interviewed to collect information regard...

Compliance with risk management plan recommendations on laboratory monitoring of antitumor necrosis factor-α therapy in clinical practice
Conclusion The rate of laboratory test monitoring for anti-TNF-α therapy increased after RMP implementation. A strategy that integrates efforts from patient's education, health profession, and regulatory agencies is needed to improve safety screening and access to laboratory resources for the at-risk group of patients.

Aethlon ’ s blood filtration device as broad countermeasure for infectious diseases
In the midst of a devastating global crisis 2 years ago, a Ugandan physician was infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone as he was treating patients. He was hospitalized at the Frankfurt University Hospital and 12 days later he was unconscious, suffering from multiple organ failure. By the time Aethlon Medical (NSDQ:AEMD) got permission to use its Hemopurifier device, the doctor required mechanical ventilation, continuous dialysis and vasopressor medications. After almost 7 hours of treatment with the single cartridge blood filtration device, the patient’s viral load dropped from 400,000 virus copies per milliliter of b...

How are HCV-infected patients being identified in Brazil: a multicenter study
ConclusionsThis multicenter Brazilian study showed that the mean time to reach a referral center for treatment was almost two years. Primary care physicians diagnoses most hepatitis C cases in the country. Population campaigns and medical education should be encouraged to intensify screening of asymptomatic individuals, considering the efficiency of check-ups in identifying new patients.

Formal hepatitis C education enhances HCV care coordination, expedites HCV treatment and improves antiviral response
ConclusionsFormal HCV education expedites HCV therapy and improves virologic response rates. As primary care provider attitude plays a significant role in referral to HCV education class, improving provider knowledge will likely enhance access to HCV specialty services in the vulnerable population.
