Liver Diseases in South Korea: A Pulse Check of the Public's Knowledge, Awareness, and Behaviors
CONCLUSION: The public's knowledge towards liver-related diseases in Korea was found to be lacking, which could account for a lower sense of urgency towards screening and treatment. More efforts are needed to address misperceptions and dispel stigma in an effort to encourage pro-health seeking behaviors.PMID:36444544 | PMC:PMC9760893 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2022.0332

Narrative review of the safety and efficacy of marijuana for the treatment of commonly state-approved medical and psychiatric disorders.
Abstract The present investigation aimed to provide an objective narrative review of the existing literature pertaining to the benefits and harms of marijuana use for the treatment of the most common medical and psychological conditions for which it has been allowed at the state level. Common medical conditions for which marijuana is allowed (i.e., those conditions shared by at least 80 percent of medical marijuana states) were identified as: Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cachexia/wasting syndrome, cancer, Crohn's disease, epilepsy and seizures, glaucoma, hepatitis C virus, human immunodefici...

New Antiviral Treatment Could Significantly Reduce Global Burden Of Hepatitis C
Scientists show potential impact of therapy in reducing transmission in UK, Canada and Australia Around 150 million people globally are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) - a major cause of liver disease and the fastest growing cause of liver transplantation and liver cancer. 1 New prevention strategies are urgently required as people are continuing to be infected with HCV. Findings, published in Hepatology, reveal the impact of a new antiviral treatment that could potentially reduce HCV rates in some cities affected by chronic HCV prevalence by half over 15 years...

Perceived Medical Risks of Drinking, Alcohol Consumption, and Hepatitis C Status Among Heavily Drinking HIV Primary Care Patients
ConclusionsOver one‐third of HIV patients are unaware of the medical risks of drinking, and do not restrict use, suggesting the need for intervention in this group. Patients coinfected with HIV/HCV may report more effort to restrict drinking, but their reported drinking quantity and frequency suggest that they are actually drinking just as heavily as HIV mono‐infected patients. Awareness of medical risk was unrelated to drinking, which suggests the need for interventions consisting of more than simple education. However, reported effort to restrict drinking did predict less drinking, suggesting the importance of patien...

Determining the true prevalence rate of Hepatitis-C in Pakistan
Conclusion Random samples from various geographical locations and population segments are required to determine a realistic Hepatitis-C prevalence in Pakistan; in the absence of such representati ve samples, novel analytical and modeling approaches may offer a viable alternative to determine the actual prevalence rate and help devise better public health policy to combat the disease.

Hepatitis C point-of-care diagnostics: in search of a single visit diagnosis.
Authors: Grebely J, Applegate TL, Cunningham P, Feld JJ Abstract INTRODUCTION: The availability of simple, tolerable, therapies for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with responses >95% is one of the greatest medical advances in decades, offering an opportunity to reverse the rising burden due to HCV and strive towards HCV elimination. A key challenge moving forward will be to ensure that those who are undiagnosed are made aware of their infection, receive HCV therapy and achieve viral cure. The availability of point-of-care tests for HCV infection has the potential to simplify testing algorithms, increase diagn...

Hepatocellular carcinoma in non-alcohol fatty liver disease - changing trends and specific challenges.
Conclusions: The constantly increasing prevalence of NAFLD in the general population can contribute to a growing role of NAFLD/NASH in HCC epidemiology. Moreover, some particular challenges specific for patients with liver steatosis may impede proper HCC diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. PMID: 31631714 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
