Factors Associated with Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence Among a Community-Based Sample of Sexual Minority Older Adults with HIV
This study utilized a stochastic search variable selection (SVSS) approach to explore potential psychosocial and structural factors associated with HIV-related health outcomes among a community-based sample of older sexual minorities (N  = 150) in South Florida, an U.S. HIV-epidemic epicenter. After SVSS, a forward entry regression approach suggested unstable housing, illicit substance use, current nicotine use, and depression were all associated with poorer ART adherence among older sexual minority adults living with HIV. No a ssociations between potential correlates and biological measures of HIV disease severity wer...

Determination and analysis of whole genome sequence of recombinant GII.6P7 norovirus in Ningxia, China
In this study, the detection rate was16.51% (183/1108) in Ningxia from January to December 2020. Among identified genotypes, GII.4[P31] and GII.4[P16] were the dominant genotypes (n = 20 and 18, respectively) while GII.6[P7] was the main type (n = 6) in non-GII.4 strains which was mainly detected in from May to July. The whole genome sequences of the norovirus diarrhea samples identified as GII.6 [P7] with Ct ≤ 30 collected in 2020 were determined. In this study, the complete genome sequences of norovirus strains PL20-044 and QTX20-071 were identified and analyzed phylogenetically. Phylogenetic analysis of the ORF1and OR...

A CRISPR-Cas12a-based platform facilitates the detection and serotyping of Streptococcus suis serotype 2
In this study, we developed a high-fidelity detection and serotyping platform for S. suis serotype 2 based on recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and a clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-Cas12a system called Cards-SSJ/K. Cards-SSJ had a detection limit of 10 CFU, takes <60 min, and no cross-reaction was found with other S. suis serotypes, closely related Streptococcus spp., or common pig pathogens, and Cards-SSK could differentiate serotype 2 from serotype 1/2. Results from Cards-SSJ and qPCR were equivalent in detecting S. suis serotype 2 in tissue samples. Analysis indicated that ...

Revising the roles of aldosterone in vascular physiology and pathophysiology: from electocortin to baxdrostat
Can J Cardiol. 2023 Sep 19:S0828-282X(23)01732-4. doi: 10.1016/j.cjca.2023.08.035. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAldosterone was initially identified as a hormone primarily related to regulation of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis. However, over the past twenty years there has been an increasing appreciation of its role in regulation of vascular function and pathophysiology in the setting of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure. The purpose of this review is to highlight recent advances in our understanding the biology of aldosterone as it relates to the pathophysiology and the management of vascular disease-e...

A Review of Studies on the Covid-19 Pandemic and the Psychological Effects of Related Measures on Children, Youth and Parents
Turk Psikiyatri Derg. 2023 Fall;34(3):202-214. doi: 10.5080/u25936.ABSTRACTPandemics are social events that affect individuals' lives in many ways and have a significant impact on the mental health of masses. Pandemics and measures taken to combat these epidemics affect children and young people as well as adults. The purpose of the current review is to compile studies that have been conducted on the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and related measures on children, youth, and parents, and use the findings to shed light on future studies. In this review, 35 studies that were determined as a result of a compre...

FGF21 and autophagy coordinately counteract kidney disease progression during aging and obesity
Autophagy. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1080/15548627.2023.2259282. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic kidney disease (CKD) has reached epidemic proportions worldwide, partly due to the increasing population of elderly and obesity. Macroautophagy/autophagy counteracts CKD progression, whereas autophagy is stagnated owing to lysosomal overburden during aging and obesity, which promotes CKD progression. Therefore, for preventing CKD progression during aging and obesity, it is important to elucidate the compensation mechanisms of autophagy stagnation. We recently showed that FGF21 (fibroblast growth factor 21), which is a prolonge...

Prevalence of hepatitis B infection in the Gambian population: A narrative review of recent developments
This study reviewed the recent trends in the epidemiological characteristics of HBV in the Gambia. The researchers conducted an online literature search for primary studies on HBV prevalence published in the past two decades from Jan 1992 to Feb 2022 inclusive on Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. All retrieved studies were assessed for eligibility according to specific inclusion/exclusion criteria, data completeness, and methodological coherence. We found that HBV infection prevalence is above 8% in The Gambia. Moreover, HBV is the most common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Gambia. Liver cirrhosis and HCC hav...
