Telephonic intervention to combat non-adherence to oral iron-folic acid supplementation in pregnancy: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: In addition to improving adherence to oral IFAS, telephonic intervention mitigates side effects and enhances hemoglobin in anemic pregnant women. The increase in adherence was threefold in the experimental group compared to a marginal rise in the control group. This study recommends the implementation of a telephonic intervention to promote adherence to oral IFAS among anemic pregnant women.PMID:37736306 | PMC:PMC10509657 | DOI:10.1016/j.eurox.2023.100235

Genetic Disorders in Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic: When to Suspect, and Why?
Indian J Pediatr. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1007/s12098-023-04845-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTJust under a decade ago, most children with genetic disorders received a phenotypic diagnosis, often by atlas matching. With advances in genomics (decoding of human genome, easy availability of genetic testing, and reduction in cost of tests), genotypic diagnosis is now a reality. Genetic diseases can lead to non-inflammatory arthritis that can mimic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). A small but growing number (as newer genes are discovered) of genetic diseases are being diagnosed in children with a seemingly inflammatory muscu...

Evaluation of pharyngeal airway volume three-dimensionally in various sagittal skeletal patterns - Systematic review
This study was prepared according to the Cochrane criteria for creating a systematic review and meta-analysis and confirms the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. This search was conducted to answer the patient/population, intervention, comparison and outcomes (PICO) question: To evaluate (outcome) and compare (comparison) whether there is a difference in airway volume in patients (participants) with different skeletal malocclusions diagnosed using 3D data (intervention). The first two authors extracted the data from the included studies and assessed the risk of bias in the...

Household cooking fuel and gallbladder cancer risk: a multi-centre case-control study in India
CONCLUSION: Biomass burning was associated with a high-risk for GBC and should be considered as a modifiable risk factor for GBC. Clean cooking fuel can potentially mitigate, and a healthy diet can partially reduce the risk among women.PMID:37733135 | DOI:10.1007/s10552-023-01787-8

Mucormycosis: update on clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment
Curr Opin Infect Dis. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1097/QCO.0000000000000976. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mucormycosis (MCR) is a common opportunistic mold infection, and Mucorales were recently designated by WHO as priority pathogens. The interest in this infection has risen significantly since the major outbreak of MCR in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in India. Herein, we summarize recently (last 24 months) published information regarding clinical aspects of MCR.RECENT FINDINGS: The disease remains protean in its clinical presentation, difficult to diagnose, and challenging to treat. In ...

Validated Checklist for Assessing Communication Skills in undergraduate medical students: Bridging the Gap for Effective Doctor-Patient Interactions
In conclusion, the developed checklist proves to be an effective and valid instrument for assessing communication skills in Phase I MBBS students. By integrating this tool into Observed Station Clinical Examinations, medical educators can comprehensively evaluate students' communication behaviors. Moreover, the checklist serves as a valuable resource for bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enabling future physicians to excel in doctor-patient interactions, a crucial aspect of patient-centered care.PMID:37732370 | DOI:10.1152/advan.00140.2023

A New Strategy for Rejuvenating Primary Healthcare: The Government-Society Partnership Model
J Prim Care Community Health. 2023 Jan-Dec;14:21501319231200763. doi: 10.1177/21501319231200763.ABSTRACTPrimary healthcare systems worldwide are under stress as increased demands during pandemic surges have exposed deficiencies in the system. Primary healthcare centers have significant responsibilities but are often underfunded and understaffed. Recent events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, have highlighted the importance of a strong primary health center network to promote community health and save lives. Most governments have multiple competing financial needs for scarce resources, ultimately limiting the advancement o...

Transport use limitations and its association with social participation among patients with stroke living in rural India
CONCLUSIONS: Independent use of different modes of transport, particularly public transportation, reduced among rural Indian stroke survivors. These transport limitations are significantly associated with reduced social participation, highlighting the need for interventions to improve accessibility and fostering greater community engagement for stroke survivors in this population.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONLimited transportation access limits social participation for stroke survivors in rural India.Study results show a significant decrease in independent transport use among stroke survivors, affecting their social part...

Assessing the Association between Psoriasis and Cardiovascular Ischemia: An Investigation of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, Cutaneous Angiogenesis, and Arterial Stiffness
CONCLUSION: According to this study, patients with psoriasis are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular ischemia due to excessive angiogenesis associated with the condition. VEGF plays a key role in atheroma formation in psoriasis patients.PMID:37727549 | PMC:PMC10506815 | DOI:10.4103/idoj.idoj_246_23

Quantification of Phytochemicals and Metal Ions as well as the Determination of Volatile Compounds, Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Antacid Activities of the Mimosa pudica L. Leaf: Exploration of Neglected and Under-Utilized Part
Chem Biodivers. 2023 Sep 20:e202301049. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202301049. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMimosa pudica L. (MP) is well-known plant in traditional medicinal system, especially in India. Unfortunately, leaves of MP are less explored. To determine the food and nutritional value of the neglected part of Mimosa pudica L. (MP), that is MP leaves, phytochemicals and metal ions of MP were quantified by newly developed HPLC and ICPOES-based methods. The content of phytochemicals observed using HPLC analysis for chlorogenic acid, catechin, and epicatechin was 141.823 (±8.171), 666.621 (±11.432), and 293.175 (±12.743) μ...

Low-MFI (median fluorescence intensity) pre-transplant DSA (donor specific antibodies) leading to anamnestic antibody mediated rejection in live-related donor kidney transplantation
We present two cases of live-related donor kidney transplants (LDKTs) with low-MFI pre-transplant DSA values who experienced an early acute antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) as a result of an anamnestic antibody response by DSA against HLA class II antibodies. These results were confirmed by retesting of both pre-transplant and post-transplant archived sera from patients as well as freshly obtained donor cells. Our examples indicate a possible ABMR in patients with low MFI pre-transplant DSA. Reclassification of low vs. high-risk may be appropriate for some patients with low-MFI DSA."PMID:37730185 | DOI:10.1016/j.trim.2023.101931
