Diagnostic Tools for Doctors' Evaluation of Tattoo Complications.
Authors: Serup J Abstract Diagnosis of tattoo complications is a multi-facetted field since many clinical entities and disease mechanisms are represented. Infections, allergies, and pigment foreign body reactions with granuloma are the major groups. The clinician needs a structured approach to diagnosis and an armamentarium of standard tests. Diagnosis primarily builds on patient history, objective clinical examination, and punch biopsy, supplemented with microbiology testing, ultrasound scanning, and clinical photography. Evaluation of allergic tattoo reactions and allergy to pigments by patch testing is not appli...

Intramuscular versus ultrasound-guided intratenosynovial glucocorticoid injection for tenosynovitis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a randomised, double-blind, controlled study
Conclusions In this randomised double-blind clinical trial, patients with RA and tenosynovitis responded significantly better to US-guided intratenosynovial glucocorticoid injection than to intramuscular glucocorticoid injection, both at 4 and 12 weeks follow-up. Trial registration number EudraCT nr: 2013-003486-34.

Novel needle guide reduces time to perform ultrasound-guided femoral nerve catheter placement: A randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks have become the standard when performing regional nerve blocks in anaesthesia. Infiniti Plus (CIVCO Medical Solutions, Kalona, Iowa, USA) is a needle guide that has been recently developed to help clinicians in performing ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that femoral nerve catheter placement carried out with the Infiniti Plus needle guide will be quicker to perform than without the Infiniti Plus. Secondary aims were to assess whether the Infiniti Plus needle guide decreased the number of block attempts and also whether it improved needle visibi...

Zika-linked birth defects more extensive than previously thought, UCLA-led research finds
UCLADr. Karin NielsenNew UCLA-led research finds that Zika-linked abnormalities that occur in human fetuses are more extensive — and severe — than previously thought, with 46 percent of 125 pregnancies among Zika-infected women resulting in birth defects in newborns or ending in fetal death.Thestudy, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that damage during fetal development from the mosquito-borne virus can occur throughout pregnancy and that other birth defects are more common than microcephaly, when babies are born with very small heads. Further, these defects may only be detected weeks or months...

Cll, a rare but treatable cause of longitudinally extensive myelitis
A 65-year-old lady presented with a 1-year history of progressive sensory and motor symptoms in the the legs, back pain, pruritus and night sweats. Neurological examination of the cranial nerves and upper limbs was unremarkable. Lower limb examination revealed mild bilateral spastic paraparesis. Cervical, axillary and inguinal lymphadenopathy was noted. Bloods showed only a mild lymphopenia. MRI revealed symmetrically diffuse nodular enhancement in the brain and longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis in the cervical and thoracic spine with leptomeningeal enhancement. CSF analysis showed a protein of 1888 mg/L, W...

Ultrasound findings predict progression to inflammatory arthritis in anti-CCP antibody-positive patients without clinical synovitis
Conclusion Ultrasound features of joint inflammation may be detected in anti-CCP-positive patients without CS. Ultrasound findings predict progression (and rate of progression) to IA, with the risk of progression highest in those with PD signal. Trial registration number NCT02012764; Results.

A Swing State in the 2016 Election: The State of the Presidential Candidates' Health
Two people running for president, ages 68 and 70. One has been acutely ill. The other is on anti-cholesterol medication. Both are out of shape. As former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump wage a divisive and stressful campaign in front of a highly polarized electorate, it's entirely possible that health may yet be a considerable factor in the outcome. Look at how Trump closed some of Clinton's lead in the polls in key swing states while Clinton was knocked out by pneumonia last month. Or the attention given to concerns about Trump's sniffs and Clinton's stamina in the first debate. The latest is that th...

Cows Milk Allergy: A Cohort of Patients from a University Hospital.
Abstract The study illustrates advantages of Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy, a new service started at St. Lukes General Hospital in patient care since April 2014. Retrospective review of Bronchoscopies and referrals to Tertiary care unit for Bronchoscopy, prior and after initiation of service at St. Lukes Hospital were studied. Total 106 procedures were performed out of which 103(98%) were for diagnostic purpose. Common Indications for bronchoscopy were functional airway assessment in 38 cases (35%) of chronic cough, 26 cases (24.8%) of suspected Malignancy. The average time taken for procedure was 15 + 1 minute with ove...

Value of ultrasonography as a marker of early response to abatacept in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and an inadequate response to methotrexate: results from the APPRAISE study
Conclusions In this first international prospective study, the composite PDUS score is responsive to abatacept. GLOESS demonstrated the rapid onset of action of abatacept, regardless of the number of joints examined. Ultrasound is an objective tool to monitor patients with RA under treatment. Trial registration number NCT00767325.

Prevalence of ultrasound synovial inflammatory findings in healthy subjects
Conclusions This study describes for the first time, in a large cohort of healthy subjects, the prevalence and location of US signs of joint inflammation and of structural damage in small joints of hands and feet. US abnormalities were quite common, and mostly located in the feet. Further studies are needed to define which US components may allow to discriminate between pathological and physiological findings in the joints commonly affected by inflammatory arthritis conditions.
