Lymphoid hyperplasia of the colon and its association with underlying allergic airway diseases
Conclusions Our results indicate that lymphoid hyperplasia in the large intestine may be associated with allergic airway diseases rather than with food allergies; thus, its presence may be useful to detect patients with underlying airway hyperreactivity.

Risk Factors and Comorbidities in Chronic Rhinosinusitis
Abstract Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a heterogeneous disorder that creates a significant burden on the healthcare system. It is caused by a combination of inflammatory, environmental, and host factors; however, the precise mechanism of how each factor leads to CRS continues to be a source of debate. Previous data regarding this topic is often inconsistent or of lower quality. In this article, we review the recent literature on the risk factors and comorbidities in CRS. Large population-based studies have helped establish smoking as a significant risk factor for CRS. The focus has now shifted towards smoking a...

A novel treatment adjunct for aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease: the low‐salicylate diet: a multicenter randomized control crossover trial
ConclusionThe low‐salicylate diet may offer a novel treatment adjunct to the current management of AERD. Clinically and statistically significant improvements on both subjective and objective outcome measures were noted for the upper and lower respiratory tracts.

Gender‐specific differences in chronic rhinosinusitis patients electing endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionEquivalent numbers of men and women underwent ESS for CRS. Overall, women electing ESS had higher total SNOT‐22 scores and lower Lund‐Mackay CT scores than men. Women reported more problems with postnasal drainage (CRS overall, CRSsNP, and CRSwNP), embarrassment (CRS overall and CRSwNP), and facial pain (CRSwNP). Gender differences in CRS are poorly understood and merit further study.

Nasal nitric oxide in relation to quality-of-life improvements after endoscopic sinus surgery.
CONCLUSION: The nNO levels in patients with CRS increased and reached a plateau after sinus surgery for both groups. Under similar subjective disease severity, the CRSsNP group had higher preoperative nNO levels and maintained a continuously longer rise before reaching a steady level after surgery. For both CRS groups, a higher initial nNO level brought better quality-of-life improvements and could be provided as a preoperative prognostic indicator. PMID: 26637567 [PubMed - in process]

Reduction of adhesions and antrostomy stenosis with topical vitamin A after endoscopic sinus surgery.
CONCLUSION: Topical VA is a promising agent for sinonasal wound healing after ESS because it can promote mucociliary reepithelization, reduce adhesion, and prevent antrostomy stenosis. PMID: 26637582 [PubMed - in process]

Frequency of γδ T Cells and Invariant Natural Killer T Cells in Helicobacter Pylori-infected Patients with Peptic Ulcer and Gastric Cancer.
Abstract To clarify the effect of γδ T cells and invariant Natural Killer T (iNKT) cells in pathophysiology of dyspeptic disorders, number of these two cells in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD), peptic ulcer disease (PUD), and gastric cancer (GC) were compared.Patients with dyspepsia were divided into three groups of NUD, PUD, and GC according to their endoscopic and histopathological examinations. Helicobacter pylori infection was diagnosed by rapid urease test and histopathology. The number of peripheral blood CD3+TCRγδ+ T cells and CD3+Va24Ja18+ iNKT cells were determined by flow cytometry. Immunohi...

Are atopy and eosinophilic bronchial inflammation associated with relapsing forms of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps?
Conclusion: In our pilot study, atopy, severe asthma, bronchial inflammation, NSAIDs hypersensitivity and high level of total IgE are possible useful prognostic factors for the proneness to relapse after FESS. The role of allergy in CRSwNP pathogenesis should consequently be given deeper consideration. Allergen specific immunotherapy, combined with anti-IgE therapy, may have an immunomodulatory effect preventing polyps relapse and need to be investigated.

Quantification of maxillary sinus accessibility via a middle meatal antrostomy.
CONCLUSIONS: Microdebriders with increasing curvatures allowed for greater access of the maxillary sinus mucosa through an middle meatal antrostomy. No single microdebrider curvature or combination of curvatures reached the entirety of the maxillary sinus wall. Knowledge about the area of reach for these blades can lead to lower per procedure costs. PMID: 26358354 [PubMed - in process]

Efficacy of endonasal phototherapy for relieving the symptoms of allergic rhinitis: Meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Phototherapy could provide nasal symptom relief and improve quality of life related to AR. However, when considering the insufficient evaluation of the efficacy of phototherapy according to the treatment methods and the high heterogeneity apparent in some parameters, further clinical trials with robust research methodologies should be conducted to confirm the results of this study. Topical mitomycin C as an adjunct to surgical debulking and medical treatment in rhinoscleroma.
CONCLUSION: Topical MMC may reduce granulation tissue and intranasal adhesion formation in patients with rhinoscleroma. Further studies with a larger number of samples and longer follow-up periods are recommended. PMID: 26163236 [PubMed - in process]

Fewer People Are Sensitive To Gluten Than Commonly Believed
By Julie Upton for U.S. News It seems as if everyone is going to great lengths to avoid gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and many processed foods. Are there real health benefits associated with going gluten-free, or is it just another passing fad? A recently published study in the journal Digestion found that 86 percent of individuals who believed they were gluten sensitive could tolerate it. Individuals with celiac disease, a hereditary autoimmune condition that affects about 3 million Americans, or roughly 1 percent of the population, must avoid gluten. Those with extremely rare wheat allergies must also r...

Laryngeal findings and acoustic changes in light cigar smokers.
Abstract UNLABELLED: The aim of this prospective study was to look at the laryngeal findings and acoustic changes in light cigar smokers in comparison to nonsmokers, in the setting of a voice clinic. A total of 22 cigar smokers and 19 nonsmokers used as controls were enrolled in the study. Demographic data included age, number of years smoking, number of cigars per week, history of allergy, and history of reflux. The confounding effects of allergy and reflux were accounted for in the control group. Subjects underwent laryngeal endoscopy and acoustic analysis. On laryngeal endoscopy, the most common laryngeal findi...

Histopathological classification of refractory chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.
CONCLUSION: Our 3-subtype classification of refractory CRSwNP in Caucasian population shows a predominant edematous structure whatever the clinical conditions may have been. Eosinophilia as a major factor of adaptive immune response in nasal inflammation is a feature of concomitant pulmonary disease. Further studies concerning mucosal remodelling and outcome assessment after sinus surgery are required to evaluate the impact of our classification on a daily basis.
