Randomized controlled trial of steroid ‐soaked absorbable calcium alginate nasal packing following endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionsThis study demonstrated that steroid‐soaked, absorbable nasal packing can be used to enhance wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery and to prevent polypoid changes in the nasal mucosa.

Role of exhaled nasal nitric oxide in distinguishing between chronic rhinosinusitis with and without nasal polyps.
CONCLUSION: Exhaled nNO levels can be used to distinguish between patients with CRSwNP and patients with CRSsNP. However, the atopic status of the patient influenced the use of nNO as a diagnostic or monitoring biomarker in CRS.

Lower Airway Inflammation in Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis as Determined by Exhaled Nitric Oxide
Conclusions: ECRS patients had lower airway inflammation as revealed by an elevated FeNO, which was parallel to the Lund-Mackay CT scores. ESS decreased the blood eosinophils and FeNO, leading to an improvement of the occult pulmonary dysfunction in ECRS patients.Int Arch Allergy Immunol 2017;173:225-232

Cryosurgical posterior nasal tissue ablation for the treatment of rhinitis
ConclusionOffice‐based cryotherapy of the PNN region is safe and well tolerated. Symptom scores were significantly decreased by 7 days postprocedure and remained lower at 30, 90, 180, and 365 days.

Comparison of the effect of aerosolized fibrin sealant and biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam on hemostasis and wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery: a prospective randomized study
ConclusionFS and Nasopore were equally successful in achieving hemostasis and patient satisfaction after FESS. However, our results suggest that differential mucosal healing patterns may be induced by alternative absorbable hemostatic materials. FS‐treated sides showed more optimal healing patterns than Nasopore‐packed sides.

Role of tissue eosinophils in chronic rhinosinusitis –associated olfactory loss
ConclusionTissue eosinophilia is associated with olfactory loss in CRSwNP, independent of disease severity. These results suggest a possible role for eosinophils or eosinophil‐associated cytokines in CRS‐associated olfactory loss.

Development and validation of a 3D ‐printed model of the ostiomeatal complex and frontal sinus for endoscopic sinus surgery training
ConclusionWe describe the development and validation of a novel 3D‐printed model for the training of endoscopic sinus surgery skills. Although participants found the simulator to be a useful training and educational tool, further model development could improve the outcome.

Allergic and nonallergic rhinitis and skin sensitization to metals: is there a link?
Conclusion. Even in the absence of skin diseases, the prevalence of sensitization to metals (patch test) is greater in nonallergic and overlapping rhinitis, as compared to allergic rhinitis and controls.

Use of balloon sinuplasty in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis in the United States
ConclusionFrom 2011 to 2014 there was an increase in the use of balloon sinuplasty and a modest decrease in the use of conventional FESS in the United States. Patients with frontal or sphenoid sinus surgical sites were more likely to have a balloon or hybrid procedure.

Middle meatal packing in endoscopic sinus surgery —to pack or not to pack?—a decision‐analysis model
ConclusionOur decision‐analysis model indicates that middle meatal packing is not advantageous for patients undergoing ESS. Absorbable packing materials have a less adverse effect on quality of life than nonabsorbable materials.

Periodic olfactory assessment in patients undergoing skull base surgery with preservation of the olfactory strip
ConclusionsExpanded endoscopic approaches to skull base tumors involving reconstruction with an NSF are associated with a short‐term negative impact on olfaction. Olfaction does not seem to be affected by the surgical resection of pituitary adenomas associated with rescue flaps. Identification of the olfactory epithelium and meticulous harvesting of the NSF are critical to preserve olfaction.

Preoperative β‐blockade and hypertension in the first hour of functional endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionsPreoperative β‐blocker use is an independent predictor of an exaggerated hypertensive response within the first hour of operative time. An exaggerated hypertensive effect should be anticipated in patients presenting for FESS with established pharmacologic β‐blockade, and caution should be applied to use of epinephrine‐containing solutions.
