Non-adherence to subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy: inadequate health insurance coverage is the leading cause.
CONCLUSION: Of the various factors, inadequate reimbursement for allergen extract and allergy injections by health insurers is the most common reason cited for non-adherence to subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy. PMID: 26195439 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Treatment of Food Allergy
The prevalence of food allergy is increasing. Food allergy can be life threatening and there is no approved treatment available. Allergen avoidance and rescue medication remain the sole management tools. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is common in the United States. However, research into safety and efficacy for food allergy is limited. Continued scientific research into food allergy herbal formula 2 (FAHF-2), refined methods of formulation, purified compounds, and other modalities are needed. Traditional Chinese medicine is the main component of CAM in the United States. Conventional doctors, CAM practit...

YouTube and Food Allergy: An Appraisal of the Educational Quality of Information
ConclusionYouTube videos on food allergy frequently recommend controversial diagnostics and commonly depict non‐IgE mediated reactions. There is a need for high quality, evidence‐based, educational videos on food allergy. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use among Allergy Practices: Results of a Nationwide Survey of Allergists
Publication date: Available online 25 March 2017 Source:The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Author(s): Michael H. Land, Julie Wang The use of complementary and alternative practices in the field of Allergy/Immunology is growing. A recent survey of American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology members examining patterns of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use and adverse effects from CAM revealed that a majority of practitioners (81% of respondents) had patients who are using CAM therapies over conventional treatments and many practitioners (60% of survey respondents) have encounte...

Risk of anaphylaxis in complementary and alternative medicine
Purpose of review: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is widespread across the world. Patients with asthma and allergy regularly use CAM therapies. Allergic and anaphylactic reactions to CAM have been reported. Recent findings: Recent attempts to regulate and monitor adverse reaction to these therapies have given us further insight into potential causes of severe allergic reactions. Several culprits identified including Andrographis paniculata, Echinacea species, bee products, Ginkgo biloba and Ginseng are discussed here. Summary: Knowing the factors that increase the risk of anaphylaxis allows reactions to...

Current Management of Moderate-to-Severe Atopic Dermatitis: A Survey of Allergists, Pediatric Allergists and Dermatologists in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest there are distinct differences in moderate-to-severe AD treatment according to physicians' specialties. Medical policy changes along with governmental supports are required in order to implement the ideal approach in real practice. For moderate-to-severe AD, a consensus on the approach to optimal management should be reached for the best outcomes, based on further randomized controlled trials. PMID: 29676072 [PubMed]

Efficacy and safety of sulfasalazine in patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria.
CONCLUSION: Sulfasalazine is a highly effective treatment for patients with antihistamine resistant CIU. The frequency of adverse events leading to an alteration of sulfasalazine treatment supports the need for close monitoring of these patients. PMID: 24331396 [PubMed - in process]

High Usage of Complementary and Alternative Medicine among Turkish Asthmatic Children.
In conclusion; the prevalance of reported CAM use among Turkish asthmatic childrenwas found to be high (66 %), with herbal medicine being the most popular modality. The results of this study shows that CAM use becomes more prevelant among asthmatic children from families with low income. It will be increasingly important for physicians who care for allergic children to be aware of high CAM usage. PMID: 26547709 [PubMed - in process]

Leading the way in penicillin allergy evaluation
The evidence that a patient with a self-reported penicillin allergy is overwhelmingly likely to tolerate treatment with a beta-lactam antibiotic is clear.1 This is excellent news for our patients because having a penicillin allergy is associated with adverse health outcomes. These adverse events include treatment failure from inadequate alternative therapies; increased risk of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile, and surgical site infections; increased length of hospital stays; and increase in the health care costs for these patients.

Impact of mitomycin C on the mRNA expression signatures of immunological biomarkers in eosinophilic nasal polyposis.
CONCLUSION: After the characterization of the expression signatures of immunologic biomarkers in ENP, we observed that the topical use of mitomycin C is important for the reestablishment of the immunologic microenvironment of a normal expression profile of biomarkers involved in ENP mucosal tissue. Managing generalized interferon‐induced eruptions and the effectiveness of desensitization
ConclusionsOur study demonstrates the benefit of allergy testing in cases of generalized drug reactions to IFN, cross‐reactivities in a single class of IFNs, and the importance of delayed IDT reading. We report for the first time the effectiveness of 12 step desensitization with peg‐IFN.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Evaluation and management of hypersensitivity to proton pump inhibitors.
CONCLUSION: The HSRs to PPIs should be formally investigated, especially when reasonable alternative therapies do not exist. The reviewers propose an evidence-based algorithm for evaluating and managing patients with an HSR to a PPI. PMID: 24267357 [PubMed - in process]

Complementary and alternative medicine for childhood asthma: an overview of evidence and patents.
This article overviews the evidence for the clinical efficacy of all major CAM modalities. Despite CAM modalities are extensively used by the patients with asthma, very few CAM patents are available. This article also discusses recent patents pertinent to asthma. Only a few patents on herbal medicine for asthma have been evaluated but therapeutic efficacy is not substantially documented. Parents seeking CAM for asthma must consult qualified registered practitioners before using it. PMID: 25731179 [PubMed - in process]
