Leading the way in penicillin allergy evaluation

The evidence that a patient with a self-reported penicillin allergy is overwhelmingly likely to tolerate treatment with a beta-lactam antibiotic is clear.1 This is excellent news for our patients because having a penicillin allergy is associated with adverse health outcomes. These adverse events include treatment failure from inadequate alternative therapies; increased risk of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile, and surgical site infections; increased length of hospital stays; and increase in the health care costs for these patients.
