Closing gaps in histoplasmosis: clinical characteristics and factors associated with probable/histoplasmosis in HIV/AIDS hospitalized patients, a retrospective cross-sectional study in two tertiary centers in Pereira, Colombia
CONCLUSIONS: Histoplasmosis is highly prevalent in hospitalized patients with HIV in Pereira, Colombia. The clinical findings are nonspecific, but there are some clinical abnormalities that can lead to suspicion of the disease, early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Urine antigen detection is useful for diagnosis, but is not widely available. An algorithmic approach is proposed for low-resource clinical settings.PMID:34384448 | PMC:PMC8358261 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-021-00377-5

What We Learned About Genetic Sequencing During COVID-19 Could Revolutionize Public Health
You don’t want to be a virus in Dr. David Ho’s lab. Pretty much every day since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Ho and his team have done nothing but find ways to stress SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the disease. His goal: pressure the virus relentlessly enough that it mutates to survive, so drug developers can understand how the virus might respond to new treatments. As a virologist with decades of experience learning about another obstinate virus, HIV, Ho knows just how to apply that mutation-generating stress, whether by starving the virus, bathing it in antibodies that disrupt its ability to infect cells, ...

Polyethylene glycol and polysorbate skin testing in the evaluation of coronavirus disease 2019 vaccine reactions
In December 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued emergency use authorizations for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, and widespread vaccination is ongoing. Contraindications to vaccination include a history of immediate allergic reaction to a component or previous dose of an messenger RNA (mRNA) COVID-19 vaccine.1 As of January 18, 2021, anaphylaxis to the Pfizer-BioNTech (Pfizer Inc, New York, New York, BioNTech SE, Mainz, Germany) and Moderna (Moderna, Inc, Cambridge, Massachusetts) vaccines have occurred at rates of 4.7 and 2.5 cases per million doses, respectively.

Poststratification as a suitable approach to generalize findings of two cross-sectional studies along the Bavarian compulsory school entrance examination: An exemplary poststratified analysis for asthma, hay fever and wheezing
CONCLUSIONS: It might be suggested that a poststratification should be performed for each GME survey. Poststratification tended to make results more comparable with previous research. In accordance with previous research, this study confirmed that male sex and high BMI are associated with asthma.PMID:33740566 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijheh.2021.113718

Forecasting Betula and Poaceae airborne pollen concentrations on a 3-hourly resolution in Augsburg, Germany: toward automatically generated, real-time predictions
AbstractAirborne allergenic pollen impact the health of a great part of the global population. Under climate change conditions, the abundance of airborne pollen has been rising dramatically and so is the effect on sensitized individuals. The first line of allergy management is allergen avoidance, which, to date, is by rule achieved via forecasting of daily pollen concentrations. The aim of this study was to elaborate on 3-hourly predictive models, one of the very few to the best of our knowledge, attempting to forecast pollen concentration based on near-real-time automatic pollen measurements. The study was conducted in Au...
