Knowledge mapping of immunotherapy for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis: a bibliometric study (2002-2021)
CONCLUSION: Over the past 20 years, the overall quality of research on immunotherapy for ARC has gradually improved, allowing the introduction of specific and targeted treatment. Currently, the main focus of ARC research is the novel routes of drug delivery and combined treatment with biological agents.PMID:36617823 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v51i1.714

Eleven science stories likely to make big news in 2023
As the COVID-19 pandemic enters its fourth year as a global health emergency, researchers will continue pushing to help make the disease manageable and ordinary. They will track hundreds of subvariants of Omicron, the highly transmissible but seemingly less lethal strain of SARSCoV-2 that dominated in 2022. Virologists will watch the virus’ evolution this year to see whether it has finally slowed or a more dangerous variant pops up, evading much of the immunity that humanity has built up to previous ones. Vaccine researchers hope to develop new shots that provide broad protection against a variety of coronaviruses.  Ano...

The long-term effectiveness of allergy immunotherapy in subjects with asthma is associated with a lower prevalence of sleep disturbances. Results from the REACT-study
Respiratory allergy often affects the upper and lower airways as allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma, with a negative impact on sleep. Allergy immunotherapy (AIT), particularly for house dust mite (HDM) allergy, has proven to be an effective treatment in asthma, but long-term data for AIT in asthma and sleep are sparse. The real-world effectiveness of AIT (REACT)-study was a large, retrospective German cohort study (2007-2017) with up to 9 years of follow-up. AIT was associated with long-term improved asthma control, reduced risk of asthma exacerbations and hospitalisations in patients with AR and pre-existing asthma (Fritzs...

Viral co-detection in severe bronchiolitis and lung function, allergic sensitization and asthma prevalence in school-aged children
Conclusions: The prevalence of asthma at 7-9 years after bronchiolitis was significantly higher in single-HRV or viral coinfection patients that in single-RSV ones. Single-HRV-bronchiolitis was independently associated with lower lung function at school-age.

The German Asthma Net: Anti-IL5(R) therapy reduces disease burden in a real-life severe asthma cohort
Conclusion: Real-life, severe asthma patients treated with anti-IL5(R) biologics showed long-term benefits regarding pivotal outcome and disease control parameters including exacerbation rate, corticosteroid use, asthma control, quality of life, and lung function values, highlighting beneficial effects previously documented in controlled studies in a real-life severe asthma cohort.

Type 2 biomarker expression according to age of asthma onset: an analysis of the German severe asthma registry (GAN)
Conclusion: Severe adult-onset asthma is characterised by a stronger expression of type 2 biomarkers than severe early-onset asthma.

Cross-sectional validation of the German version of the Asthma Impairment and Risk Questionnaire (AIRQ)
Conclusions: The German version of the AIRQ demonstrated the ability to identify patients with poor asthma control. These results confirm the validity of the AIRQ in a non-US population.References1. Murphy, K. R., et al. J. Allergy Clin. Immunol. Pract. 2020; 8:2263-2274

ADRB2 Arg16Gly is associated with nocturnal asthma symptoms despite LABA use in two European pediatric asthma studies
Conclusion: ADRB2 Arg16Gly is a risk factor for NA symptoms despite LABA use in children. Children carrying this genetic variant might benefit from an alternative treatment to control NA symptoms.
