The Gut-Immune-Brain Axis in Autism Spectrum Disorders; A Focus on Amino Acids
Conclusion In Table 1, an overview is presented of the complex roles of AAs described in this review regarding the microbiome-gut-immune-brain axis in ASD. Besides behavioral deficits, people with ASD are characterized by systemic inflammation, gastrointestinal immune-related disturbances and changes in the gut microbiota composition. Moreover, differences in levels of specific AAs in various body compartments, including the intestinal tract, blood, urine and brain have been reported in patients with ASD, as well as in rodent models for ASD. This review described that specific AAs can modulate the intestinal epithelial im...

Editorial: Shaping of Human Immune System and Metabolic Processes by Viruses and Microorganisms
Conclusions In conclusion, articles in this Research Topic made a very significant contribution to our understanding of the role played by environmental factors, dysbiotic conditions, and infections in triggering diseases. Since this is a rapidly expanding area of research, many other factors contributing to the onset of these diseases are not covered here. We are confident, however, that further studies will expand the list as well as bring a better understanding of mechanisms involved in the onset of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Author Contributions All authors listed have made a substantial, direct and i...

Allergic contact dermatitis caused by dipropylene glycol diacrylate in the Omnipod ® insulin pump
CONCLUSIONS: When suspecting ACD to MDs DPGDA at 0.1% in pet. should be tested. The content of Omnipod® has changed over time. Patch testing with updated test series and relevance assessment of positive reactions is a delicate task. Children, with lifelong use of MDs, risk contracting many allergies with potential cross-allergies. A question should be raised - whether these low molecular weight acrylates should at all be used in devices constantly worn on the skin.PMID:34510410 | DOI:10.1111/bjd.20751

Pollution may increase diabetes risk
Conclusion This German study looked at the relationship between air pollution and proximity to the nearest road at the child’s birth address, and the child’s insulin resistance when they were aged 10. Though links were found between increasing levels of nitrogen dioxide and levels of particles less than 10 micrometres in diameter and increasing insulin levels at age 10, there are important limitations to bear in mind: Though the researchers have attempted to adjust for many potential confounders, it is difficult to conclude that the air pollution at the birth address has directly caused the child’s insulin resista...

49 Year Old Male: Chest Pain
This excellent case comes to us from our friends in the UK. The author wishes to remain anonymous, but we thank him for his contribution. It is about 8am on a gorgeous Wednesday morning, when your Paramedic unit is dispatched to a 49 year old male, "chest pain". You arrive at the bungalow of a summer resort and are greeted by an elderly couple. "They don't look too bad", you think, but you are not that lucky. "Our son has been complaining of chest pain and vomiting for a couple of days". You are led back to a room where you find your 49 year old patient lying in bed. His parents say...

A challenging undertaking: Stem cell transplantation for immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome
Immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome is a rare, life-threatening systemic autoimmune disorder caused by mutations in the forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) gene, which is required for the development and function of regulatory T cells and prevention of autoimmunity.1 Although most patients present in infancy with a clinical triad of intractable diarrhea, insulin-dependent diabetes, and eczematous dermatitis, some patients present with severe food allergies, other autoimmune manifestations, or both.

Anyone Heard of MSM / DMSO?
My Dad has found, through research, a naturally ocurring compound called MSM. Naturally ocurrs in the body and in many foods. Basically a sulphur that our body needs. Why does it POTENTIALLY relate to CF? Because MSM affects cell membranes, especially mucous membranes. It basically naturally coats cell membranes to help relieve them of excess pressure, fluid and toxins. It is believed to have amazing anti-inflammatory effects. I found a few articles referencing MSM use for the respiratory and digestive tracts. There aren't many studies done on this, and as usual, our ridiculous FDA does not want to approve this. Only side ...

Seeds—Health Benefits, Barriers to Incorporation, and Strategies for Practitioners in Supporting Consumption Among Consumers
This review provides an overview of the botany and classification of seeds, summarizes recent research examining the health benefits of seeds, and discusses barriers to incorporating seeds into Western diets. Strategies to help practitioners support their patients in incorporating more seed foods into the diet are suggested. Seed foods, including cereals and pseudocereals (whole grains), legumes, and nuts and oilseeds, are used as staple crops in traditional diets and still comprise nearly 50% of the world’s food supply. The health benefits of seeds are supported by both epidemiological evidence and intervention trials. ...
