Incidence, clinical characteristics, and outcome of interstitial pneumonia in patients with lymphoma
In conclusion, IP is a life-threatening complication in lymphoma patients. Glucocorticoid therapy with continuous monitoring of chest radiographic changes may be a favourable strategy for treating IP. However, IP may recur, especially in patients re-treated with a similar chemotherapy regimen.

Silicone breast implants and autoimmune rheumatic diseases: myth or reality
Purpose of review: In the present review, recent findings regarding silicone breast implants (SBIs) complicated by rheumatic autoimmune diseases are described. Recent findings: Despite changes in the principal constituents of the silicone implants during the past 50 years, silicone remained an adjuvant that may ’bleed’ and subsequently may be a chronic stimulus to the immune system resulting in similar clinical manifestations as 50 years ago. Silicones are spread throughout the body and can be detected in tissues and the central nervous system. Autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome by adjuvants (ASIA), allergies, autoimmun...

New cancer drug can prevent reactions to common airborne allergens
(Northwestern University) A cancer drug for patients with certain types of leukemia and lymphoma can also prevent reactions to some of the most common airborne allergies, according to a recent Northwestern Medicine study. The promising data from this pilot study could have greater implications for adults with food allergies.

Abstract PR03: Association of environmental risk factors, family history, and polygenic risk scores with chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Conclusions: We found evidence of independent effects among the genetic and non-genetic factors with risk of CLL. Among these factors, the PRS had the largest effect size. Although we did not observe any statistical interactions, larger sample sizes are warranted to fully evaluate these effects on risk of CLL. We are currently increasing our sample size through collaboration with other research groups. Final results will be presented in the meeting. This abstract is also being presented as Poster A06.Citation Format: Geffen Kleinstern, Dennis Robinson, Tim G. Glyphosate Chemophobia Grips Sonoma County: Sprayers Don Hazmat Suits, Respirators After Switch to 'Safer' Organic Weed Killers
If you've followed the often acrimonious debate over GMOs in foods, you've probably seen pictures of farmers walking through corn and soy fields bedecked in hazardous material suits and respirators. Why do they wear protective gear? According to anti-GMO activists, they are protecting themselves from glyphosate, a chemical often paired with GMOs that they claim is a cancer-causing herbicide. These people wearing hazmat suits are actually Greenpeace activists ripping up genetically engineered plants in the Philippines in 2011. That's ironic in a tragic way as the plants being uprooted are engineered with the natural soil-...

What Really Killed Glenn Frey
When Glenn Frey, a co-founder and driving force behind ’70s supergroup the Eagles, died on January 18, I wasn’t just saddened by the loss. I was deeply concerned about the manner of his death. News reports said Frey died from a combination of “complications” from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), one of the most debilitating chronic diseases. RA is an inflammatory autoimmune condition. It affects the entire body — particularly the joints. The body develops antibodies against its own joint tissues, breaking them down. A modern inflammatory diet, genetic factors and food allergies all play a role in developing RA. Enviro...

Eosinophils in cancer: favourable or unfavourable?
Abstract Eosinophils are granulocytic leukocytes residing in blood and tissues in the lung, breast, gastrointestinal and reproductive systems. Eosinophilia is uncommon in healthy individuals, however, it is associated with allergies, helminth infections and some inflammatory states. Eosinophilia has also been observed in cancer, including colorectal, breast, ovarian, cervical, oral squamous, Hodgkin's lymphoma and prostate cancer. Whether an increase in eosinophils leads to a favourable or unfavourable prognosis still remains controversial and depends on many factors including the type of cancer. Eosinophil infilt...

“You Make the Call” — 86 Year old Female: Dizzy
It is a beautiful September morning when the tones go off for a 91 year old female, “altered mental status”. “Guess breakfast will have to wait”, as you and your partner head towards the residence. As you enter the one level home, you are directed to a back bedroom where you find your patient lying in bed. She is alert and oriented, but her color seems pale. She seems uncomfortable. Her radial pulse is strong, and she is breathing normally. You ask what happened… ” I was sitting at the kitchen table having some tea when I got really dizzy. My friend helped me to bed, but it hasn&#...

Common Immune-Related Exposures/Conditions and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Case-Control Study of Disease-Discordant Twin Pairs
We evaluated the association between common immune system–altering experiences and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) risk using a case-control study of 162 like-sex twin pairs discordant for NHL, identified from the International Twin Study. Information on medical history and evidence of childhood exposure to microbes was obtained by questionnaire from 1998 to 2002. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Intra-twin-pair agreement between twins on individual exposures was high (76%–97%). A negative association between NHL and seasonal hay fever (odds ratio (OR) = ...

5 Scary Symptoms That Are Usually Harmless
SPECIAL FROM Next Avenue By Linda Melone After 50, aches, pains and the occasional muscle twinge become a fact of life. But some symptoms that may seem frightening or serious turn out to be far less than they appear. While you should always see a doctor if you experience something out of the ordinary, these signs generally are more smoke than fire: A Bloody Nose Nosebleeds can be particularly frightening due to the suddenness in which they occur and the sometimes large amount of blood involved. “People worry that it’s internal bleeding, but almost every time it’s not,” says Dr. Carlo Reyes, emergency room...

Prediagnostic immunoglobulin E levels and risk of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, other lymphomas and multiple myeloma-results of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
We examined the association between prediagnostic total (low: <20; intermediate: 20–100; high >100 kU/l) and specific IgE (negative: <0.35; positive ≥0.35 kU/I) concentrations against inhalant antigens and lymphoma risk in a study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort. A total of 1021 incident cases and matched controls of NHL, multiple myeloma (MM) and Hodgkin lymphoma with a mean follow-up time of 7 years were investigated. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by conditional logistic regression. Specifi...
