Associations between allergies and risk of hematologic malignancies: Results from the VITamins and lifestyle cohort study
Immune dysregulations associated with allergies may affect cancer cell biology but studies on the relationship between allergies and risk of hematologic malignancies (HM) yielded inconsistent results. Herein, we used the vitamins and Lifestyle (VITAL) cohort to examine this association. From 2000 to 2002, 66,212 participants, aged 50–76, completed a baseline questionnaire on cancer risk factors, medical conditions, allergies, and asthma. Through 2009, incident HMs (n = 681) were identified via linkage to the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results cancer registry. After adjustment for factors possibly associated ...

Combined DOCK8 and CLEC7A mutations causing immunodeficiency in 3 brothers with diarrhea, eczema, and infections
We report 4 brothers from a consanguineous Italian family with an immunodeficiency syndrome characterized by severe eczema, milk and egg allergies, recurrent infections, intractable diarrhea, failure to thrive, and, in 2 of the 3 surviving brothers, lymphoma. One of the brothers (patient II-2) died at age 12 months of cardiovascular failure caused by intractable diarrhea, and the other 3 were evaluated as part of this study ( and , A). The proband (patient II-1) presented shortly after birth with severe eczema and intractable diarrhea without gastrointestinal infection. In the first year of life, he had multiple allergies ...

Abstract PR03: Association of environmental risk factors, family history, and polygenic risk scores with chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Conclusions: We found evidence of independent effects among the genetic and non-genetic factors with risk of CLL. Among these factors, the PRS had the largest effect size. Although we did not observe any statistical interactions, larger sample sizes are warranted to fully evaluate these effects on risk of CLL. We are currently increasing our sample size through collaboration with other research groups. Final results will be presented in the meeting. This abstract is also being presented as Poster A06.Citation Format: Geffen Kleinstern, Dennis Robinson, Tim G. New cancer drug can prevent reactions to common airborne allergens
(Northwestern University) A cancer drug for patients with certain types of leukemia and lymphoma can also prevent reactions to some of the most common airborne allergies, according to a recent Northwestern Medicine study. The promising data from this pilot study could have greater implications for adults with food allergies.

Editorial: Shaping of Human Immune System and Metabolic Processes by Viruses and Microorganisms
Conclusions In conclusion, articles in this Research Topic made a very significant contribution to our understanding of the role played by environmental factors, dysbiotic conditions, and infections in triggering diseases. Since this is a rapidly expanding area of research, many other factors contributing to the onset of these diseases are not covered here. We are confident, however, that further studies will expand the list as well as bring a better understanding of mechanisms involved in the onset of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Author Contributions All authors listed have made a substantial, direct and i...

HLA-DRB1*07:01 is associated with a higher risk of asparaginase allergies
Asparaginase is a therapeutic enzyme used to treat leukemia and lymphoma, with immune responses resulting in suboptimal drug exposure and a greater risk of relapse. To elucidate whether there is a genetic component to the mechanism of asparaginase-induced immune responses, we imputed human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles in patients of European ancestry enrolled on leukemia trials at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (n = 541) and the Children’s Oncology Group (n = 1329). We identified a higher incidence of hypersensitivity and anti-asparaginase antibodies in patients with HLA-DRB1*07:01 alleles (P = 7.5 x ...

Medical History, Lifestyle, Family History, and Occupational Risk Factors for Follicular Lymphoma: The InterLymph Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Subtypes Project
Conclusions The few relationships observed provide clues suggesting a multifactorial etiology of FL but are limited in the extent to which they explain FL occurrence.

Medical History, Lifestyle, Family History, and Occupational Risk Factors for Mantle Cell Lymphoma: The InterLymph Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Subtypes Project
Conclusions The novel observations of a possible role for atopy and allergy and farm life in risk of MCL, together with confirmatory evidence of a familial link, suggest a multifactorial etiology of immune-related environmental exposures and genetic susceptibility. These findings provide guidance for future research in MCL etiology.

Prediagnostic immunoglobulin E levels and risk of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, other lymphomas and multiple myeloma-results of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
We examined the association between prediagnostic total (low: <20; intermediate: 20–100; high >100 kU/l) and specific IgE (negative: <0.35; positive ≥0.35 kU/I) concentrations against inhalant antigens and lymphoma risk in a study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort. A total of 1021 incident cases and matched controls of NHL, multiple myeloma (MM) and Hodgkin lymphoma with a mean follow-up time of 7 years were investigated. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by conditional logistic regression. Specifi...

5 Scary Symptoms That Are Usually Harmless
SPECIAL FROM Next Avenue By Linda Melone After 50, aches, pains and the occasional muscle twinge become a fact of life. But some symptoms that may seem frightening or serious turn out to be far less than they appear. While you should always see a doctor if you experience something out of the ordinary, these signs generally are more smoke than fire: A Bloody Nose Nosebleeds can be particularly frightening due to the suddenness in which they occur and the sometimes large amount of blood involved. “People worry that it’s internal bleeding, but almost every time it’s not,” says Dr. Carlo Reyes, emergency room...

Common Immune-Related Exposures/Conditions and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Case-Control Study of Disease-Discordant Twin Pairs
We evaluated the association between common immune system–altering experiences and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) risk using a case-control study of 162 like-sex twin pairs discordant for NHL, identified from the International Twin Study. Information on medical history and evidence of childhood exposure to microbes was obtained by questionnaire from 1998 to 2002. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Intra-twin-pair agreement between twins on individual exposures was high (76%–97%). A negative association between NHL and seasonal hay fever (odds ratio (OR) = ...

“You Make the Call” — 86 Year old Female: Dizzy
It is a beautiful September morning when the tones go off for a 91 year old female, “altered mental status”. “Guess breakfast will have to wait”, as you and your partner head towards the residence. As you enter the one level home, you are directed to a back bedroom where you find your patient lying in bed. She is alert and oriented, but her color seems pale. She seems uncomfortable. Her radial pulse is strong, and she is breathing normally. You ask what happened… ” I was sitting at the kitchen table having some tea when I got really dizzy. My friend helped me to bed, but it hasn&#...
