Does class rank matter if its ONLY preclinicals?
I go to a DO school in the East Coast. We only rank preclinical grades based on GPA I think, and clinicals do not count for rank.
Our professors were saying preclinical grades and class rank is as important as boards but.... (x) doubt.
This got me wondering, if we only rank preclinical, should I just focus on boards/research/extracurriculars and worry about not being bottom quartile only (i.e. just focus on being 3rd or 2nd quartile)? For example there is a lot of stuff on our micro and...

Lets say you received a biology degree with a very low GPA, what next?
Very low meaning in the 2.0 to 2.5 range. I graduated with a 2.4 GPA and about 160 credit hours due to retakes. It is going to take forever to pull that GPA up and quite frankly, I am just not going to do it.
Some of my friends were smart, after their first year of college they switched over to business where they were able to get above a 3.0 and now work as consultants in big cities. So many of them have jobs in media, business, consulting, and are living a life they love. All the while, I...

Changing practices/relocation
Hi all,
I'm an anesthesia resident and know we have quite a bit of flexibility in picking up extra shifts, locums, moving, etc.
Just curious about how that works in ophtho. For example in pp, if you are working towards partnership or are a partner, and you decide to move. What happens to your "stake" and do you basically have to start over as a lowly associate at a new city? It seems most ophthos pick a location, stay there to build their practice and cruise into retirement.
I assume much...

Pitt vs UCI
Hey everyone, stuck in an internal war between these two schools. I’m a SoCal resident so UCI is close to home, but I’m getting pushback on wanting to go to Pitt. I am interested in pursuing a surgical subspecialty, and have made the argument that “Pitt matches well nationwide” but my family is looking at match lists and sees that there is a paucity of West Coast matches.
On the other hand, UCI has no public match lists, but I believe they match primarily in west coast and adjacent states...

Is it worth to do extra schooling to apply to in state schools
I currently graduated from my university with a 3.7 cumulative, 3.6 science gpa and will have around 900 hours of veterinary experience as well around 1,000 hours of animal experience. I'm going to be applying for veterinary school this summer and then taking a gap year. I already have 6 schools that I will be applying to. However, I am 1 course short of being able to apply to UC davis which is an in state school and 2 courses from being able to apply to Western University. I don't think I...

Volunteer positions requiring limited interaction
From past threads, interaction with those in need is what adcoms seem to look for in volunteer positions. Many of the opportunities near me aren't very interactive; duties require no - to very little - interaction with those in need. Given the limited interaction, should I stay away from these opportunities for my main, long-term volunteer position?
Soup kitchen - kitchen position involving solely making plates (distribution is facilitated by staff members)
Food delivery - food/grocery...

Rush Medical College vs UAB
Hello, I have a few days to decide between UAB and Rush. I will be moving with my partner. I am not particularly set on a speciality but leaning towards surgery. I do want to match back in Florida.
Rush Medical College
Pros:
Chicago is an amazing city and is very exciting to me. My heart is leaning this way. Spent over 4 days there and I could see us living there.
I connect a lot more with the incoming class (more diverse & friendly)
Amazing public transport
Paid summer...

HPAC missed appointments
Hey guys, I made a general advising appointment with my HPAC advisor and I missed the meeting. This happened once before in February too and I apologized for both times. Do y'all think that she will put this in her letter? I had my question answered already and forgot to cancel my meeting, but it was just a general advising meeting and not anything deadline specific. Emory vs Mount Sinai
Beyond thrilled about these choices but pretty torn!
Emory Pros:
- fell in love with the school culture and ~vibes~ during second look, really kind and cool students, already feel like i have friends
- extremely collaborative
- received the Woodruff scholarship (covers full tuition + 3k per year stipend; does not cover full COA)
- lots of time for Step 1 dedicated which ppl use to take vacation lol
Emory Cons:
- far from support system. my partner’s family is in the NE. my partner wants to...
