Role of toll-like receptor-mediated pyroptosis in sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 19;167:115493. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115493. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSepsis, a life-threatening dysregulated status of the host response to infection, can cause multiorgan dysfunction and mortality. Sepsis places a heavy burden on the cardiovascular system due to the pathological imbalance of hyperinflammation and immune suppression. Myocardial injury and cardiac dysfunction caused by the aberrant host responses to pathogens can lead to cardiomyopathy, one of the most critical complications of sepsis. However, many questions about the specific mechanisms and characteristics of this ...

Super-Resolution With Binary Priors: Theory and Algorithms
The problem of super-resolution is concerned with the reconstruction of temporally/spatially localized events (or spikes) from samples of their convolution with a low-pass filter. Distinct from prior works which exploit sparsity in appropriate domains in order to solve the resulting ill-posed problem, this paper explores the role of binary priors in super-resolution, where the spike (or source) amplitudes are assumed to be binary-valued. Our study is inspired by the problem of neural spike deconvolution, but also applies to other applications such as symbol detection in hybrid millimeter wave communication systems. This pa...

Energy levels and lysine, calcium and phosphorus adjustments on broiler nutrient digestibility and performance
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2023 Sep 18;95(4):e20191391. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202320191391. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTChicken broilers digestibility and performance fed with different ME levels, with and without adjustments of digestible lysine, calcium, and available phosphorus, were evaluated. For digestibility, 210 male Cobb 500 chicken broilers were used and distributed into a 3x2+1 factorial arrangement, with three ME levels (3050; 3125 and 3200 kcal/kg) with and without nutrient adjustment, plus one control treatment (2975 kcal ME/kg), totaling seven treatments including six repetitions with five birds into each repetition. ...

Fabrication of versatile polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogels for information hiding and flexible sensors: Heat-induced adjustable stiffness and transparency
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 18:126950. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith the growing demand for wearable electronics, designing biocompatible hydrogels that combine self-repairability, wide operating temperature and precise sensing ability offers a promising scheme. Herein, by interpenetrating naturally derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel matrix, a novel hydrogel is successfully developed via simple coordination with calcium chloride (CaCl2). The chelation of CMC and Ca2+ is applied as a second crosslinking mechanism to stabilize the hydrogel at r...

A neonate with aseptic cutaneous necrosis related to the migration of the proximal central venous catheter infusion port
We report a case of aseptic cutaneous necrosis from extravasation of calcium chloride at the proximal port of a central venous catheter (CVC). A right internal jugular CVC was placed with ultrasound guidance using contemporary guidelines for size and insertion site. Catheter migration occurred concurrent with development of postoperative anasarca. Four days later, leakage of infusate with skin necrosis was noted at the insertion site. Despite initial proper positioning, catheter ports can migrate out of intravascular structures due to postprocedural subcutaneous edema. Intravascular confirmation should be performed regular...

Submandibular suction lipectomy and single-hole inflator-free endoscopic thyroidectomy with a submental approach: a new surgical technique
Gland Surg. 2023 Jul 31;12(7):974-981. doi: 10.21037/gs-22-624. Epub 2023 Jun 30.ABSTRACTWe have successfully carried out single-hole inflator-free endoscopic thyroidectomy through a submental approach, which has the advantages of less trauma, fewer complications, and hidden incisions. However, for patients with submandibular fat accumulation, submental incisions are not easy to hide, which directly affects the cosmetic effect. We developed a new surgical strategy "submandibular suction lipectomy and single-hole inflator-free endoscopic thyroidectomy with a submental approach" for these patients. We initially used submandi...

Calcium signaling-mediated transcriptional reprogramming during abiotic stress response in plants
Theor Appl Genet. 2023 Sep 20;136(10):210. doi: 10.1007/s00122-023-04455-2.ABSTRACTCalcium (Ca2+) is a second messenger in plants growth and development, as well as in stress responses. The transient elevation in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration have been reported to be involved in plants response to abiotic and biotic stresses. In plants, Ca2+-induced transcriptional changes trigger molecular mechanisms by which plants adapt and respond to environment stresses. The mechanism for transcription regulation by Ca2+ could be either rapid in which Ca2+ signals directly cause the related response through the gene transcript and prot...

The self-regulating on cohesion properties of calcium phosphate/ calcium sulfate bone cement improved by citric acid/sodium alginate
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2023 Sep 16;231:113548. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2023.113548. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCalcium phosphate cement (CPC) has attracted extensive interest from surgeons and materials scientists. However, the collapsibility of calcium phosphate cement limits its clinical application. In this work, a gel network of SA-CA formed by the reaction of citric acid (CA) and sodium alginate (SA) was introduced into the α-TCP/α-CSH composite. Furthermore, a high proportion of α-CSH provided more calcium sources for the system to combine with SA forming a gel network to improve the cohesion property o...

Polysaccharide-Based Composite Hydrogel with Hierarchical Microstructure for Enhanced Vascularization and Skull Regeneration
Biomacromolecules. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c00655. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCritical-size skull defects caused by trauma, infection, and tumor resection raise great demands for efficient bone substitutes. Herein, a hybrid cross-linked hierarchical microporous hydrogel scaffold (PHCLS) was successfully assembled by a multistep procedure, which involved (i) the preparation of poly(lactic-co-glycolic)/nanohydroxyapatite (PLGA-HAP) porous microspheres, (ii) embedding the spheres in a solution of dopamine-modified hyaluronic acid and collagen I (Col I) and cross-linking via dopamine polyphenols binding to (i)...

Machine learning-based mortality prediction in hip fracture patients using biomarkers
J Orthop Res. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1002/jor.25675. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this retrospective study was to assess whether mortality following a hip fracture can be predicted by a machine learning model trained on basic blood and lab test data as well as basic demographic data. Additionally, the purpose was to identify the key variables most associated with 1-, 5-, and 10-year mortality and investigate their clinical significance. Input data included 3751 hip fracture patient records sourced from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database, which provided records from in-hospital databas...
