Ensuring treatment fidelity in intervention studies: Developing a checklist and scoring system within a behaviour change paradigm
CONCLUSIONS: Results emphasise the importance of training quality, practice and reflective opportunities and clear materials to promote treatment fidelity. The construction of the checklist and scoring system was described in detail, informing the development of future checklists. After further trialling, the checklist can be used to ensure the M-DLS is delivered with high treatment fidelity in the comparison trial.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject Treatment fidelity is an essential component of intervention effectiveness and efficacy studies, ensuring the intervention is delivered as intended. It...

Olfactory training: Effects of multisensory integration, attention towards odors and physical activity
Chem Senses. 2023 Sep 16:bjad037. doi: 10.1093/chemse/bjad037. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOlfactory training (OT) has been shown to be of value in the treatment of olfactory dysfunction. The present study aimed to investigate whether the efficacy of OT could be modulated with multisensory integration, attention towards odors, odor complexity, or physical activity assessed with a questionnaire. One hundred healthy participants were recruited and divided into four groups. Except for controls (n=26, mean age±sd = 36±15 years) all participants performed OT four times a day. In the "Video" group (n=26, age 39±19 years) OT...

Constructing phylogenetic networks via cherry picking and machine learning
CONCLUSIONS: Unlike the existing exact methods, our heuristics are applicable to datasets of practical size, and the experimental study we conducted on both simulated and real data shows that these solutions are qualitatively good, always within some small constant factor from the optimum. Moreover, our machine-learned heuristics are one of the first applications of machine learning to phylogenetics and show its promise.PMID:37717003 | PMC:PMC10505335 | DOI:10.1186/s13015-023-00233-3

The Anesthesiology Physician-Scientist Pipeline: Current Status and Recommendations for Future Growth-An Initiative of the Anesthesia Research Council
Anesth Analg. 2023 Oct 1;137(4):728-742. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006520. Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTThe limited number and diversity of resident physicians pursuing careers as physician-scientists in medicine has been a concern for many decades. The Anesthesia Research Council aimed to address the status of the anesthesiology physician-scientist pipeline, benchmarked against other medical specialties, and to develop strategic recommendations to sustain and expand the number and diversity of anesthesiology physician-scientists. The working group analyzed data from the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Nationa...
