Cognitive interventions for adults with chronic kidney disease: protocol for a scoping review
This study will provide a comprehensive overview of the cognitive interventions that have been studied for people with CKD. It will help identify research gaps within this population (e.g., types of interventions that have yet to be investigated; best practices in cognition research that have not been implemented) and inform the direction of future research in this field.

A Systematic Review and Jurisdictional Scan of the Evidence Characterizing and Evaluating Assisted Peritoneal Dialysis Models.
CONCLUSIONS: Reported outcomes and quality were heterogeneous, and relative efficacy of assisted peritoneal dialysis could not be determined from included studies. Although the patient voice was under-represented, suggestions to improve assisted peritoneal dialysis included using a person-centered model of care, ensuring continuity of nurses providing the peritoneal dialysis assist, and measures to support patient independence. Although attractive elements of assisted peritoneal dialysis are identified, further evidence is needed to connect assisted peritoneal dialysis outcomes with programmatic features and their associat...

Blood pressure targets and pharmacotherapy for hypertensive patients on hemodialysis.
Authors: Maruyama T, Takashima H, Abe M Abstract Introduction: Hypertension is highly prevalent in patients with end-stage kidney disease on hemodialysis and is often not well controlled. Blood pressure (BP) levels before and after hemodialysis have a U-shaped relationship with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Although antihypertensive drugs are recommended for patients in whom BP cannot be controlled appropriately by non-pharmacological interventions, large-scale randomized controlled clinical trials are lacking.Areas covered: The authors review the pharmacotherapy used in hypertensive patients on dialysis,...

Prevalence and Mortality of Pulmonary Hypertension in ESRD: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
ConclusionsEchocardiographic evidence of PH is common among ESRD patients undergoing dialysis and associated with increased mortality. Identification of those patients with evidence of pulmonary hypertension on transthoracic echocardiography may warrant further evaluation and treatment.

Taking a Step Further in Identifying Ideal Blood Pressure Range Among Hemodialysis Patients: A Systematic Review and a Meta-Analysis
ConclusionThough not statically significant, the current study identifies <140 mm Hg as a promising blood pressure range for optimum survival among ESRD patients on hemodialysis. However, further studies are required to establish an ideal blood pressure range among hemodialysis patients.Systematic Review RegistrationThe study protocol was registered under PROSPERO (CRD42019121102).

Mechanical assist devices for acute cardiogenic shock.
CONCLUSIONS: There is no evidence from this review of a benefit from MCS in improving survival for people with acute CS. Further use of the technology, risk stratification and optimising the use protocols have been highlighted as potential reasons for lack of benefit and are being addressed in the current ongoing clinical trials. A Phase 3 Open-label, Randomized, Controlled Study to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of Intravenously Administered Ravulizumab Compared with Best Supportive Care in Patients with COVID-19 Severe Pneumonia, Acute Lung Injury, or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A structured summary of a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial
AbstractObjectivesPrimary Objective• To evaluate the effect of ravulizumab, a long-acting complement (C5) inhibitor plus best supportive care (BSC) compared with BSC alone on the survival of patients with COVID-19.Secondary Objectives• Number of days free of mechanical ventilation at Day 29• Duration of intensive care unit stay at Day 29• Change from baseline in Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score at Day 29• Change from baseline in peripheral capillary oxygen saturation/ fraction of inspired oxygen (SpO2 /FiO2) at Day 29• Duration of hospitalization at Day 29• Survival (based on all-cause mortali...

Functional health literacy in renal replacement therapy: an integrative review
Conclusion The twelve instruments to measure functional health literacy in patients under renal replacement therapy show satisfactory psychometric properties, but only one is validated to be used in Brazil. The insufficient use of tools to evaluate literacy in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis was noteworthy.

Antimicrobial mouthwashes (gargling) and nasal sprays administered to patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection to improve patient outcomes and to protect healthcare workers treating them.
CONCLUSIONS: We identified no studies for inclusion in this review. This is not surprising given the relatively recent emergence of COVID-19 infection. It is promising that the question posed in this review is being addressed by a number of RCTs and other studies. We are concerned that few of the ongoing studies specifically state that they will evaluate adverse events such as changes in the sense of smell or to the oral and nasal microbiota, and any consequences thereof. Very few interventions have large and dramatic effect sizes. If a positive treatment effect is demonstrated when studies are available for inclusion i...

The influence of cognitive-behavioral therapy on depression in dialysis patients - meta-analysis.
Conclusions: The study showed that the use of psychological intervention based on cognitive- behavioral therapy was an effective method of decreasing the severity of depressive symptoms in hemodialyzed patients. For the sake of patient well-being, it seems reasonable to extend renal replacement therapy with psychological intervention such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. PMID: 33224325 [PubMed]

Purposeful Review to Identify Risk Factors, Epidemiology, Clinical Features, Treatment and Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology.
Authors: Abdissa D Abstract The global burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has risen, and chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) contributes considerably to the national burden of CKD. It is characterized by irreversible, slowly advancing disease, and symptoms often appear in the late stages of the disease. It is a serious, novel cause of kidney failure and leads to premature deaths. Many hypotheses have emerged; however, the etiology of CKDu continues to be elusive and debatable and it is claimed that the etiology is multifactorial, encompassing environmental, genetic, occupational, and social factor...

Diphenhydramine Use in End-Stage Kidney Disease
Conclusions: The data available for use of diphenhydramine in ESKD and dialysis are limited. Clinicians should use caution with the use of diphenhydramine in this population.

Outcomes of Remote Patient Monitoring for Automated Peritoneal Dialysis: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusion: Although HRQOL and dialysis-related outcomes were comparable between RPM-APD and T-APD, RPM-APD was positive in terms of patient satisfaction. Further long-term and large-scale studies will be required to determine the efficacy of RPM-APD.Trial Registration: CRIS identifier: KCT0003390, registered on December 14, 2018 – retrospectively registered, https://cris.nih.go.kr/cris/search/search_result_st01.jsp?seq=12348.Nephron
