Decreased stroke risk with combined traditional Chinese and western medicine in patients with ischemic heart disease: A real-world evidence
Both ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke are major causes of death worldwide. We investigated the effects of combined Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medicine (WM) on stroke risk in IHD patients. Taiwanese patients with IHD were enrolled in the TCM study during their outpatient visit. Stroke events after TCM or non-TCM treatment were examined. Chi-square tests and Student t-tests were used to examine differences between patients using and not using TCM. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs). Sex, age, and comorbidities were included in a multivariable Cox...

Traditional Chinese medicine formulas, extracts, and compounds promote angiogenesis.
Abstract Ischemic diseases, such as ischemic heart diseases and ischemic stroke, are the leading cause of death worldwide. Angiogenic therapy is a wide-ranging approach to fighting ischemic diseases. However, compared with anti-angiogenesis therapy for tumors, less attention has been paid to therapeutic angiogenesis. Recently, Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has garnered increasing interest for its definite curative effect and low toxicity. A growing number of studies have reported that TCM formulas, extracts, and compounds from herbal medicines exert pro-angiogenic activity, which has been confirmed in a few c...

Emodin in atherosclerosis prevention: Pharmacological actions and therapeutic potential.
Abstract Atherosclerotic plaque formation, destabilization and eventual rupture leads to the acute cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction and stroke. Emodin (PubChem CID#3220), (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthracene-9,10-dione) is a pharmacologically bioactive constituent isolated from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Radix rhizoma Rhei. This molecule has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, anti-apoptotic and lipid-modulating effects. Experimental studies have demonstrated that emodin attenuates and stabilizes atherosclerotic plaques. In this mini-review, we provide a summary of...

A Semantic Analysis and Community Detection-Based Artificial Intelligence Model for Core Herb Discovery from the Literature: Taking Chronic Glomerulonephritis Treatment as a Case Study.
Authors: Zhang Y, Liu Y, Zhu J, Zhai S, Jin R, Wen C Abstract The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula is the main treatment method of TCM. A formula often contains multiple herbs where core herbs play a critical therapeutic effect for treating diseases. It is of great significance to find out the core herbs in formulae for providing evidences and references for the clinical application of Chinese herbs and formulae. In this paper, we propose a core herb discovery model CHDSC based on semantic analysis and community detection to discover the core herbs for treating a certain disease from large-scale literatur...

Rehmapicroside ameliorates cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury via attenuating peroxynitrite-mediated mitophagy activation.
Abstract Peroxynitrite (ONOO-)-mediated mitophagy activation represents a vital pathogenic mechanism in ischemic stroke. Our previous study suggests that ONOO- mediates Drp1 recruitment to the damaged mitochondria for excessive mitophagy, aggravating cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury and the ONOO--mediated mitophagy activation could be a crucial therapeutic target for improving outcome of ischemic stroke. In the present study, we tested the neuroprotective effects of rehmapicroside, a natural compound from a medicinal plant, on inhibiting ONOO--mediated mitophagy activation, attenuating infarct size and improvi...
