Stroke and Etonogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol Ring (NuvaRing): Clinical, Radiological, and Prognostic Features
A recent study found that NuvaRing (a vaginal contraceptive ring containing 15  µg ethinyl estradiol and 120 µg etonogestrel) has 2.5 times increased relative risk of thrombotic stroke compared to nonuse.

Use of combined hormonal contraception and stroke: A case-control study of the impact of migraine type and estrogen dose on ischemic stroke risk
CONCLUSIONS: Overall stroke risk in our cohort of CHC users was low. When CHCs are used in those with migraine, formulations containing ≤30 μg EE are preferred. GPER expressed on microglia mediates the anti‐inflammatory effect of estradiol in ischemic stroke
ConclusionsOur studies have suggested that GPER expressed on microglia mediated the anti‐inflammatory effect of estradiol after ischemic stroke. Our studies could potentially help to develop more specific drugs to manage inflammation postischemic stroke. GPER was highly expressed in activated microglia after ischemia and estradiol. The specific GPER agonist G1 could inhibit the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines including IL‐1β and TNF‐α, which the anti‐inflammatory effect of G1 and E2 were both abolished by the specific GPER antagonist G15.

The Effect of Low-dose Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills on Brachial Artery Endothelial Function and Common Carotid Artery Intima–Media Thickness
Conclusions: Prolonged used of low-dose COCs may cause changes in both endothelial function (measured by FMD%) and endothelial structure (measured by CCA-IMT). There was a nonsignificant inverse relationship between the duration of COC ingestion and FMD% and a nonsignificant positive relationship with CCA-IMT. Our results are in favor of early atherosclerotic changes in prolonged users of COCs.
