A specific dietary intervention to restore brain structure and function after ischemic stroke
Occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAo) is among the most common causes of ischemic stroke in humans. Cerebral ischemia leads to brain lesions existing of an irreversibly injured core and an ischemic boundary zone, the penumbra, containing damaged but potentially salvageable tissue. Using a transient occlusion (30 min) of the middle cerebral artery (tMCAo) mouse model in this cross-institutional study we investigated the neurorestorative efficacy of a dietary approach (Fortasyn) comprising docosahexaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, uridine, choline, phospholipids, folic acid, vitamins B12, B6, C, and E, and seleni...

Interaction of serum calcium and folic acid treatment on first stroke in hypertensive males
The role of serum calcium on the risk of stroke is still uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the effect of serum calcium on first stroke risk, and on the efficacy of folic acid treatment in prevention of first stroke among hypertensive patients.

Near-elimination of folate-deficiency anemia by mandatory folic acid fortification in older US adults: Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study 2003-2007.
CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that, after mandatory folic acid fortification, the prevalence of folate-deficiency anemia is nearly nonexistent in a community-dwelling population in the United States. PMID: 23945721 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Folic acid supplementation among adults with hypertension reduces risk of stroke
(The JAMA Network Journals) In a study that included more than 20,000 adults in China with high blood pressure but without a history of stroke or heart attack, the combined use of the hypertension medication enalapril and folic acid, compared with enalapril alone, significantly reduced the risk of first stroke, according to a study appearing in JAMA. The study is being released to coincide with its presentation at the American College of Cardiology Annual Scientific Session.

Folate Supplements for Stroke Prevention Targeted Trial Trumps the Rest
The effect of folate supplementation on cardiovascular disease has been studied in many observational studies and randomized trials and has been a topic of debate for a number of years. In this issue of JAMA, Huo and colleagues provide results from their important clinical trial of folic acid therapy for primary prevention of stroke. In a carefully designed and executed randomized trial, 20 702 adults with hypertension were randomized to receive enalapril alone (n = 10 354) or enalapril combined with 0.8 mg folic acid (n = 10 348). As recommended by the data and safety monitoring board, the trial was terminat...

Effectiveness of Gotu Kola Extract 750 mg and 1000 mg Compared with Folic Acid 3 mg in Improving Vascular Cognitive Impairment after Stroke.
This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of gotu kola (Centella asiatica) in improving cognitive function in patients with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). This study uses a quasi-experimental design. Subjects in this study were patients with poststroke cognitive impairment who were treated at two hospitals in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The number of subjects was 48: 17 subjects were treated with 1000 mg/day of gotu kola extract, 17 subjects treated with 750 mg/day of gotu kola extract, and 14 subjects treated with 3 mg/day of folic acid for 6 weeks. A Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Indonesian version (MoCA-Ina...

Influence of renal function on the association between homocysteine level and risk of ischemic stroke.
We examined whether the association between total homocysteine (tHCY) and risk of ischemic stroke (IS) varies depending on renal function to gain insight into why tHCY-lowering vitamins do not reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease in clinical trials. We analyzed data from 542 IS patients with large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) or small artery occlusion (SAO) after stratification by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) to evaluate renal function. We found that tHCY level was positively associated with the occurrence of IS in both LAA (OR: 1.159, 95% CI: 1.074-1.252, P<0.001) and SAO (OR: 1.143, 95% CI: 1....
